Unable to play DVD video discs on DVD-Rom drive.

I originally had SONY Media bar software that came with my notebook. But lately it could not recognize any DVDs' I would insert into the comp. So I uninstalled it and re-installed Media bar from my SONY recovery CD. But still I could not play normal movie. DVDs'
So, I recently installed Power DVD version 6.0 on my SONY Windows 98 notebook. Installation went fine. I installed Microsoft DirectX 9.0C also so that I donot have any graphics issue. That installation also went fine. The Power DVD software is able to recognize when I insert a regular DVD video disc but the PROBLEM is that I donot see any video. Instead I see symmetric patterns of rainbow colors repeating over and over when the DVD plays. I can hear the audio in the background. If I insert different DVD video discs, I get different patterns of symmetric colors on the screen.
If you are not familiar with this, I would appreciate if youcan direct me to some other group/are who might know about this. thanks.
