Hi folks,

I am fairly new to this but have created a handful of backups of my own DVDs without any problems with DVDShrink and adjusting the compression to get the best result for the main movie.

I had problems with Constantine, however. DVDShrink ripped virtually the whole disk, then crashed right at the end (99% complete).

I tried DVDdecrypter and found that it also failed right at the end of the ripping process. It actually threw out an error message saying it had been unable to read the final .BUP file ("VOS_3.BUP" I think). The error message also mentioned something about "cyclical reduncancy check".

Does anyone here know the best way around this? Can the offending file be safely skipped? Is re-authoring the best solution (and if so where is there a guide?)

Thanks in anticipation :-)

Try cleaning the disc. It's either dirty or scratched. If that does not work, try this method:

Open DVD Decrypter, click on Tools, then Settings

Click on Defaults, then select these;

General tab
Options - Removal Method - Aggressive

File Mode tab
Options - Remove PUOs (IFO and/or VOB)

ISO Read Mode tab
Options - Remove PUOs (IFO and/or VOB)

CSS tab
CSS Cracking Method - Brute Force ~> I/O Key Exchange

On Failure - Yes

IMPORTANT:
I/O tab
Options - Ignore read errors.

This is an excellent setting for dealing with scratched discs which may cause ripping problems.

Good Morning DakotaFan, I tried as you suggested and DVDdecrypter still encountered the same problems. Eventually I stopped it (it was continually retrying to read the same file over and over), and skipped the offending file. Interestingly it gave a message saying I had skipped 2 files (a .VOB and a .BUP) when I thought I had only skipped one. Anyway, DVDShrink didn't let me do a full back up from the files, it warned that files were missing. I went into reauthor mode and did a back-up of just the main movie files (no menus or any extras etc). This worked, so at least I have the bare movie :-)

Thanks muchly for the tips.

Hmmm... I have Constantine, so I'm going to try this one out for myself to see if it happens to me to or if you just have a bad disc. I usually use AnyDVD, but I'll leave it off to try this since you didn't use it.
AnyDVD is a great program and it can get past most of the encryptions out there, if not all of them. The only thing that steers some people away from it is that it is only free for 21 days. After that, it's $39.00, but well worth it IMO.
You can download the free trial at http://www.slysoft.com

Yeah, I saw that mentioned in the forum yesterday. It's one for me to bear in mind. I've not had any issues at all with DVDShrink until the blip with Constantine. It has worked every time perfectly and I have not experienced any degradation in video quality, even when compressing to 60% of original size. I'll probably use it for most stuff in future. I now also have DVDdecrypter as a back-up ripper in case I come across other stuff Shrink can't handle. Ironically, since I eventually resorted to just getting the main feature off the disc, I could have did that with Shrink in the first place!

AnyDVD can wait until I need something more powerful (when companies up the level of copy protection on discs for example).

Thanks again for the tips, PAL. It's a learning process for me :-)

OK, you must have a bad disc because I was able to successfully rip Constantine with Decrypter and compress with Shrink. Sometimes things just happen that way. You just got a bad pressing.
You're welcome for the help. It's one of the reasons why I'm here. I'm basically here to help people and to learn new things myself. These are great forums. There are lots of cool people here who are always willing to help out and give their input on things.

Hey bobajob61, I had the same problem with Constantine. What I did was ran AnyDVD in the background then used DVD Decrypter to rip it to an ISO, then I opened it in DVD Shrink and it burned perfectly.

I did Constantine two days ago without a hitch. No probs whatsoever. Maybe you had a bad disk.

when you ran the movie thru decrypter and it reached 99%,didnt it ask you if you wanted to delete the part of the iso that was already made?at which point you would say no then run the iso thru shrink and see how it turns out.

it sounds like a minor scratch or smudge mark on the disc is causing the problem.and maybe cleaning the disc even if it doesnt look dirty might help.

Has anyone tried to burn Constantine to a DVD-DL?

it would be pointless to use dvd9.they cost about $10 a disc.that is how much the original will cost after a few months after the release.so you might as well buy another copy of it as a backup.but if you want to tinker around with dvd9 just for sag, then its possible.use dvd decrypter to copy the movie in file format(not iso).then burn it to a dvd9 with another burn program as decrypter only burns iso images.

Actually... for smart shoppers, they're about $1.50... which is what I bought them for... so it's not pointless anymore... =)

Yeah, I just had EXACTLY the same problem with my Batman Begins - is it from the same company? Maybe they are putting a little bit of duff info on the DVD to try to deter people from copying? Anyway, I did proceed with JUST the main movie and it turned out fine :-)
