Can I reformat a HDD from pc?

I have a version 10 ps2 with magic v 5k6 chip in it....

I want to put a hard drive in that has already been used as a storage disc,,, in an external enclosure.

Can i, or do i even need to delete/format that drive in any particular way before setting it up in the ps2 for games/apps?

And,,, what is easiest way to format that drive once in the ps2?

Can I use the version 0.7 HDLoader disk that is on dvd to set up a drive like this?

Finally,,, THANK YOU for any help!!
