What program to convert Rmvb, Rm to Avi?

Hey,
I have tried using Winavi to convert Rmvb, Rm to avi but it didnt work. And I have tried other Converters such as RM converter aswell but still doesnt work. Not sure if its the codec that im having a problem with.......I use Xvid codec in the options....I have very little experience about codecs if anyone can explain what exactly the codec does would be greatly appreciated. Like whats the difference between the codec you use to view certain videos and whats the use of codec in the conversion process. And any recommendations in which program to use.
