i bought sm 3.6 about a month ago and i've just started noticing that it clicks (laser bumps dvd) while loading on my v12 and that there are little scuffs on the inner ring of the sm dvd disk. incidentally, whenever it does this a gray box appears around the ps2 logo onscreen. the grey logo has, as i recall, done this every so often sice i bought it, so i assume the laser has been having problems every so often too.
ive tried cleaning the lens repeatedly and resurfacing the sw dvd disk, but the laser still "clicks". i been searching the blogs here and googleing and i havn't found a solution. i have a feeling that lens clicking loads effect gameplay and can't be good for the laser itself. i read somewhere that it isn't possible to adjust the lens on th v12 like older version of the ps2, but was wondering if the dead beef diode laser fix would work. any advice/suggestions are greatly appreciated. thnx.

Does it boot originals? If so then it isn't the laser. Are you using a flip top or slim tool?

Well at least it's not the laser. The v.12 is known to have a faulty laser. Swap Magic has some issues with cheaply pressed discs. This effects a low percentage of the discs but has been known to happen from time to time. How often does Swap Magic actually load. The simplest explanation is a defective Swap Magic disk. Does the Swap Magic CD load?

yes the s.m. cd disk loads, but it clicks too. i don't know if i mentioned it before, but both the s.m. disks load, it's just that they're getting scratched, (by the lens i assume) and that can't be good for the lens. i did some experimentation with some older games that would occasionaly load on my old playstation (not sure the version)and when they did load they would click. these played fine on my version 12. the clicking on my old playstation seemed to predicate it not playing dvd movies and then eventually dying. you can see why this clicking is so alarming on a v12 that is not even a year old. b.t.w., thanks for your response.

Hmm I can understand your concern. Occasionally the Laser will click when trying to load a backup, especially if they are patched, but it's unusual for it to do with originals. The v. 12 PS2 laser is fickle. Check to see if your laser is scratched. If not then maybe your flip top isn't on securely. Do you have the original flip top that came with it or did you install one?

Yeah, I'd agree with you, it (the scratching and clicking) doesn't sound at all good. I'm assuming you mean really loud clicking, and not just normal laser movement, right?

As for the grey box thing, I've had that occur every so often with the 3.3 CD, though it doesn't really adversely affect loading or play. Never happened with the DVD, though.

What sort of scratches are you getting? Exactly how loud is the "clicking"? (the sound of the laser movement, in normal cases, shouldn't be any different than with original PS2/PSX DVD/CD games) And what's the date code on your PStwo (check the sticker label on the bottom with the serial code)? It sounds like yours is one of the earlier slimlines, though I can't be certain.

If your PStwo does in fact go bad, the warranty is valid for a year, so it should be covered. I don't know if you've broken the warranty yet, though >.>

Hey, i also have swap magic 3.6+ and v12 slimline. I use magic tools though, so no warrenty has been broken (except it's far past the warrenty date)

Mine makes the grey Playstation 2 logo as well, but im sure it's just for the version 12's, because v13/14 dont experience it as is my understanding.

My ps2 also makes loud clicking when loading up swap magic, however not during back-up play. I would also like to know if this is adverse to my ps2's health or if it's not cause for concern!

Thanks in advance!

I thought I read that cleaning your SMD resolved the issue.
