Unfortunantly, the 4x media is getting harder to find.
The 8x should work,if your firmware on that sony burner is programmed for that media. There is a slight chance your burner may not recognize it,the firmware is the reason. You may have to find the latest update, but some of those older 4x drives haven't been updated in a long time.
The only 4x quality media I know that is still circulating is the verbatim digital movie quality discs.Bestbuy has some great sales on this media. The maxell/sony/and ty 4x media is very hard to come by.
My cyberhome tv burner is only rated for 4x only, but my +8x verbatim data life plus are the best discs for that recorder.
My dad and a buddy have the NEC 1100A,which is 4x only, and have no trouble with +8x fuji and sony Yudenooo-T02,Maxell Ritek-r03.These are high quality media.I know their burners firmware probably haven't been updated for ages and no problems.

No problems with my Sony....backups are great....could be a problem with your media or system....or the end user.
I believe the Sony burner is a litey as well!

The sony dru 510a: I don't believe it is a rebadged litey,but I could be wrong,LOL.
Here's a list of the ones I know of:
http://codeguys.rpc1.org/firmwares.html
That lite-on 1653s should be a very good burner. It's got booktyping capability!
Maybe you can use that sony 510 as your dvd reader, and burn to the litey?
It's pretty conveniant having dual drives while backing up dvds!
It'll also save the wear and tear on the litey and make is last longer. Just a thought for you to consider.

@SWINGTIP - i do believe you're also from the UK. good stuff. also the guys have given some good replies there. Most newer Sony's are just rebadged Lite-on's (not sure about all the older ones either). Starting with the Sony 810 these are now rebadged Benq drives (the 1640 if i recall correctly), not sure if all future Sony's will be rebadged Benq's, ie i dunno if they would still use rebadged Lite-on's or only rebadged Benq's from now on. I only very recently took my failing Sony DRU-700A (rebadged Lite-On something-or-other) and now have a Lite-On 1693S (as this was £10 cheaper than the equivalent Sony 800A - ie rebadged 1693S)

@swingtip
your Sony SHOULD burn the 8x rated discs @4x~ :) as long as the firmware is up to date, you should have no problems burning them @4x~ (and using GOOD QUALITY media of course) :)

Yes m8, when i go to the pc fair near me ill get some 8's and give them a go in the sony, if thay dont work ive allways got the liteon so that ant to bad. Its just that i payed £150 for the sony + and - and the liteon + and - £46 spots and the liteon is top dolla m8 it will burn to a peace of paper if you put it in lol, the sony has the 8 meg buffer and liteon 2 but i carn't see any diff out the two
when burning a dvd or cd for that matter.
i flashed the sony and the liteon so thay are up to date as far as the firmware go's.
The sony is crap because if thay ant the right 4 speed disks it wont burn them as i tryed befor and for what i can see the updates thay do for the burners don't make the burners burn with higher speed disks.
Datersafe 4 speed is the ones the sony love's but u carnt get the any more as i have about 75 disks of them but carn't bang um in the liteon as thay are for me camcorder/ sony as sonic my dvd soft carn't fooking see me liteon only the sony, more crap from sony lol.
Cheers.
