My PS2 was making very loud noises lately. It suddenly got worse yesterday, and when I pulled out the game afterward, a large scratch, actually more like a gouge was on the outside of the disc. This was not on there when I put it in. Looked at my SM disc and it is very scratched up on the outsides as well.
Put in a brand new disc, same thing happened. What part would be malfunctioning to cause this?
Well ive never heard of this problem but in my opinion i think its your lens.May be there too close to the disk and it causing them to get scratched.Try opening the PS2 and then the DVD drive and check the lens if there scratched.If they are its probably the lens,if there not damaged,check around the drive for anything that could be causing this.Again,im sorry that i cant help you any further.I just never heard of a PS2 damaging disks like this.
I took it apart today once again to try and figure out the problem. The lens seemed to be clearing just fine so I started it up without it tightening the tray cover up. It stopped making the noise, except for when the SM disc would initialize it would make a split second one. This would kind of make sense with the scratching, if it was forcing it down too low.
So I didn't tighten it down so much this time and it appears to be working at the moment, but it did this the last time as well for an hour then got worse.
The sound sorta sounds like the laser moving as well. Can you oil the track it is on? Maybe it's just getting slowed down at times. Guess I'll just see if not having it so tight will help out. Thanks for any help guys.
Alright, I will try that then. I haven't had a single problem since I loosened those screws up a bit. That must of been the problem. Must of been pushing the disc down on to the plastic. Now I just have to stop myself from destroying it while playing Tiger Woods '06. I've never had a game piss me off so much lol.
hmm... try opening up your drive and running the PS2 with it open and a disk in the drive wtih the top off, and you can observe it and stuff then. JUST DON'T TOUCH THE PS2 WHILE IT"S ON ESPECIALLY THE MOTHERBOARD! STATIC WILL FRY IT! BE CAREFUL!!!

That's what I did to diagnose the problem. I pushed down hard at the screw points and it started making the noise again. Let off and it was fine. I ran it for about 6 hours last night with no problems at all.
I must of just tightened them down too much after I cleaned the laser lens. That little plastic piece that is on the tray cover must of been forced to push it down because of the screws. I guess I'm used to tightening bolts and screws down on motorcycles and cars. Should of laid off a little on the delicate electronics. ;)
So, the sound came back, along with the freezing. Pulled the disc out, and the top of the disc was being damaged as well! This is getting crazy.
So I took it apart once again, lubed the laser track since I've been meaning to anyways. I didn't put the screws back in since I did this once before and it worked fine and it's working fine again without the screws in. I don't have any of the screws in that you would take out to get to the laser. Absolutely no problems. Any ideas on what may be going on here? I'm thinking I'm tightening them down to hard, but I just don't know.
As the Chinese wiseman would say, leave the screws out haha. But, I'd rather not really.
