Dial-up Internet Won't Work

I've installed MPT and updated it on my laptop running XP Pro. I can get my phone numbers off the phone and can dial out via my laptop. The only reason I purchased the software and cable was for 2 reasons. One is being able to access the internet via my dial-up account and two is to be able to dial out and connect to a modem located on my office computer to look-up information if needed while on the road. I've set up the internet options in the software and tried to dial out. A message appears on the screen that it can't make a connection and then 1 to 2 seconds later the phone lights up and beeps a couple times. The phone I'm using is a Motorola version T720c. Any help someone can give me would be appreciated. Also if this software won't do what I'm asking of it, is there something that would? Thanks in advance.
