formatting sony ps2 hdd

Hello all and thank you for your help in advance. I have been searching for some rudimentary answers about installing a sony 40gb hdd into my son's ps2.
Currently the ps2 does not recognize the hdd. He does not have the v1.10 utility disk. My question is...do you need to format the drive with the v1.10 utility disk OR can you use HDLoader instead...or do you have to use v1.10 utility EVEN before you can use HDLoader. He wants to utize the sony hdd to store his games.
I'm sure this is an easy question to someone, I've been searching without finding an answer. My apologies if there is a more obvious area of information. Again thanks for the help.

If he just wants to store his games on the HDD, then you only need to use HDLoader (HDLoader formats the HDD). I'm not sure if when you use the v1.10 utility disc, the HDD appears in the PS2 browser screen, hopefully someone reading this can answer. But I hope this helps you.

it does not now im fucked because i have to play ffxi well i dont but i want to if your just using it for putting games on it put it in the computer as a slave get winhiip and formatt it that way well that will help you out people if any one knows how i could get utility disk please help i need to get my hard drive back up in my browser so i can get on ffxi please help

Ok so what you're saying is that the HDD DOES show up in the PS2's browser when you use the utility disc. I know that if you use HDL it wont, I was asking about the utility disc.
And that link that Tokijin posted already shows instructions for HDL :P

ya thats what i did i formatted it with winhiip and that what it has is hdloader formatt on it so now i got to find a way to get a copy of that utility disk if any one gots working files private me and ill send you my email some one please help

ps2 hdd utility disk that comes with ffxi well i got mine used for exploiting some one memory card but he didnt give me utility disk for the hard drive and since it bin in some ones ps2 before mine i had to formatt to get on to ffxi so i did it with winhipp well i should of not have done that but if you can help please do peace

Short answer use google. I did a preliminary search and didn't find much. It is very possible a backup of the HDD utility disc may be useless ala Swap Magic, Breaker Pro, or HD Loader. I've gotta study, but I'll let you know if I find anything.

Where do u start in all this confusion..... Nickzard....u said $ony hard drive...do u mean the official $ony hard drive that came with FF on it ??? If so..then simply install the HDD and drop in the utility disc and it should just work....winhiip is NOT a formatting program gamer...not sure who told u it was. What it does, is allows your comp to see whats on the ps2/hd advance/hdloader format. The utility disc is useless to anyone using a non official $ony HDD. With a standard IDE hard drive installed...use hd advance/hd loader...and theres a couple other programs out there... and this will format the HDD so that it can be used to store and play most games from it.... BUT...this does NOT include the online portions of certain games...these must be addressed in other fashions.

hello ppl i got a problem and you can help i got a ps2 a network thinggy E and M both and i can get some hard drives but the thing is how do i get it to work im to cheap to buy a sony hdd and i just want to see if i can download songs and shit to ma ps2 so if any budy can help me plz if you dont mind and a link to were i can get a hdd ulitly tool for formatting the hdd and if some one got pic's like a how to install or something that would be good to lolz laterz peace out !!!
