i have once read on a technique to record more than 700MB on a CD-R, but i can't seem to find it, does anybody knows?

its called over-burn, your software (such as nero) and burner must support it. You can only cram a few more megs onto it though. they do make 90 min/800mb CDRs though, you can find them at allmediaoutlet.com

For the best quality mp3s use EAC (exact audio copy) to rip your audio CDs and LAME to encode them. Follow this guide:

there is another option in Nero that will allow you to add about 12 extra megs to a cd-r, just look in the preferences in Nero and check enable generation of short lead out.
