Converting VOB to AVI for publishing online

About a year ago, a string was created that dealt with converting VOB to AVI.
I stumbled into a year-old string still on the site about converting VOB files to AVI.

Minion - AfterDawn Addict - 19. September 2004 @ 20:13 recommended installing Virtual-Dub-Mpeg2 & AC3ACM Decompressor, which I did. I followed the instructions about settings further down in the string, and converted my file to AVI.

When I view the avi file in Windows Media Player, the video is fine but the sound is choppy and unlistenable.

Does anybody know something that might steer me in the right directions? I would very much appreciate feedback.
