get the AR Max, it allows you to play AVI files without any mods
just pop in the disc, select player, and then eject the AR and pop in the cdr with the AVI file on it. If you want to play VCD files and have a network connection so you can send media files to your Ps2 then check the thread called VCD on PS2

or you can use the PS2 Reality Player to play the AVI FIles, Use CDGen to create a cd the PS2 Reality Player can reconize(you can put the PS2 Reality Player files with the movies on a disc, or if you have the exploit installed on the MC that makes it boot when a psx game is put in the drive, then just drag the avi files into CDGen and make an iso. Then Burn it, once done load the PS2 Reality Player and swap the psx disc if you are using it to load it, or just pop in your disc with your mod chip enabled. PS2 Reality Player will then check the disc when you select CD option when in ip config[not the net browser option unless you want to stream video over to your ps2 using the pc software.]then just go to browse or play and launch the avi files that way. It also will run avi files off DVDR's!

Not worth the hassle, imho. You'll have to re-encode (and downsample) everything you want to play on the PS2 since it is not fast enough to handle normal encodes in XviD/DivX with the PS2reality player -- you'll experience some pretty irritating skipping on a frequent basis. That said, it's worth burning the player for novelty value (or mp3 playback).
If you really want to playback DivX/XviD files effectively without resampling all of them, I'd just suggest using a dedicated standalone player with that functionality (like the Philips DVP642) or something faster, like the Xbox. Much as I love the PS2, it simply isn't powerful enough to handle normal media playback.

It doesn't skip when you put dummy files on the disk like the Dreamcast. It makes it play with out any skips what so ever. It only skips when you are using it to load long movies over a network cable.
Just put dummy files on the disc if there is any room on it. This way the movies load faster and look/sound better.

try just loading the PS2 Reality player by it's self and if that works, just change the disc with the one that has the files on it then select config and select net browser and then select cd/dvd browser( makes it refresh the disc) then click back and select browse and make sure that you have the correct files being selected to be shown by pressing the square button which allows you to change the file format from jpeg, mp3, and AVI. If that doesn't work, then I don't know what you should do since I don't have any information on using a Mod chip on a PS2 and how to fix certian problems.

I don't know how to do that, but I do know how to make a HD Loader Memory card hack so it loads with a PSX Game.
