I'm going to buy a used PS2 (with a 1 year on-site replacement plan). I will have a number of used consoles to choose from, and the retailers said I can check the serial numbers for versions.
I want to buy the generally most reliable version available - and one with excellent flexibility for future modding.
At first, I will probably go the swap-route/slide card - and exploits - so I don't void the 1 yr warranty.
I been checking around here, an googling for a few days, and here's the common problems I uncovered with the various versions:
v 1-4 faulty/weak lasers (more likely to develop disk read error probs, etc.)
v 9 and 10 - laser burnout probs (especially with a mod chip - needs extra fix)
v 12 and 13 (slimline) - laser probs (like v 9/10), overheating (no fan), and can't use exploits.
Any problems/considerations I missed? (I think there was something with 7 and 11, but I don't recall what.
Considering what I mentioned above, please let me know what versions you would buy first (listed in order of preference if possible). Also, any other advice you think I should consider in the purchase.
V7 is widely considered the best version they ever made
I happen to have one and have had it for years and not
had a problem with it.
I say if you are getting one get a V7
But being used you can never tell what you will get.
But if you have some extra cash i know a site that actually
has brand new V7's. A guy i know found a store that was unloading
them from back stock and even though he could only get one at a time
he just kept getting in line and getting another on.
These are premodded with your chip of choice
He has pictures of his installs on the site and he is well
known to people who have had DMS chips installed. He does a top notch job.
http://www.teammodders.com/ they are working on the server today so if you can't get the
site to come up don't worry. it will be up soon.
a DMS4 Pro is about as flexable as you get. It can play anything including DVD9 Back ups, has HDD support and flash upgrades so you
can update it with new features for free whenever they are released.
Thanks for the reply. I don't want to invest too much in the ps2 now, since the ps3 will be out in the spring. I figure a low-cost used one (with a 1 yr replacement gaurantee) will carry me to when the ps3 mods and bugs have been worked out.
But thanks for the advice on getting the v7. I will make the rounds tomorrow, and look for one. If no v7's are available, are there other versions that are almost as good (or, ones I should try to avoid). Any order of preference (considering my needs/plans)? I will wait if I have to, since it seems they have a steady supply coming in (btw, they say they throughly test them; and, of course, the factory seal is unbroken).
I would not buy a V4 or lower, they are not able to play
both +R and -R media, just the -R
I had a V5/6 that was pretty good. Other than that the
only other one i have is a slim PSTwo
Hopefully you can get some more responses. The only way to tell if they are good is to have actually owned one for a few years.
And the V7 and v5/6 are the only 2 older models that i had.
