You don't need to download software, you can just connect it to a Firewire port and transfer with Windows MovieMaker included in XP.

I am getting following error message despite the firewire attached and no DV on screen of Video camera.
Any ideas please ?
I have just bought DV Camcorder so its all new to me.
A video capture device is not detected. Check....
This is when I go to File then Capture Video. Should I be doing this?
Thanks tonypp

You question is somewhat unclear. Please tell exactly what you do, what programs you use and then what happens...
Did you turn on your camcorder when you coonected to your PC?

Firts step is to check if your cam is recognized by your system.
Connect your cam and turn it to VCR-mode. next open the Manager and check if the camcorder shows up there. If not, you have a bad connection (Firwire card not properly mounted, bad cable, cable not plugged in properly).
If it is visible, try one of the freeware capture programs listed here: http://www.digitalvideoclub.com and see if you can capture with one of those.

Sansung have just phoned . they are taking Camcorder away for testing to see if it is faulty.
That just leaves the firewire card. Is there a test for this?

from your reply I gather you did not check the Device Manager to see if the Firewire card is installed.
Do as follows: right click "My computer", select "Properties", select the "Hardware" tab, click the button "Device Manager".
In the list you should now see a category called "IEEE1394 Bus Host Contollers". In that category you should see the card, something like " XXX OHCI compliant IEEE1394 Host Controller" where XXX can be some brand name.

Looks OK, so you just have to wait until Samsung returns your cam.

How should ieee 1394 in Network place be set up ?

When you have the unit pluged in, make sure you set your Samsung camcorder to player mode. This is the only way Windows will pick it up and install the necessary drivers.
This is how you can tell that the DV camcorder is working.

Apparently I've overlooked one of TPFKAS suggestion about putting the camcoder in vcr-mode (same thing as player mode).
Here's one thing you can check for me.
Go to my network places, on the left side the window where it says network tasks, click view network connections.
You should see 1394 Connection (1394 Net Adapter) in the screenshot listed below.
Enable:
Disable:
The question. Is the 1394 Connection enable or disable? If it's disable, you will need to re-enable the device by right clicking it and choose enable. Try pluging the DV camcoder again and put it on vcr or player mode.

I feel dumb since you mention that the 1394 connection is active. I'm just going to shut up now.

Evertime I reread this thread you started back in October, I keep picking new things I miss. Right now I'm playing catchup and trying to retrace every step you took already. :-p
Another question maybe you can answer. How many firewire ports do you have on your computer?
