DVD+R 4.7Gb (4.38Gib) Created by the DVD+RW Alliance. Technically not an official DVD format as it is not recognised by the DVD Forum. DVD+R also upports booktyping. About 90% compatible with set-top players without booktyping the disc.
DVD-R Originally 3.95Gb later expanded to the full size. Created by the DVD Forum (Who came up with the original DVD standard). About 93% compatible with set-top players.
Some people believe that the DVD+R standard is _technically_ a better format, but in practice it doesn't make much of a difference, except where booktyping os factored into it. When a disc is played, the first four bits of the disc determine what kind of media it is. DVD-ROM identifies itself as such, and DVD-R identifies itself as such. DVD+R allows you to set the disc to identify itself as a DVD-ROM to increase compatibility to virtually 100%.
However, most modern DVD writers are hybrid, meaning they can write both, so the choice is up to what you're going to play it on when you've finished.
They both use the same dye type, so unless it says on the label, you're going to have to put it into a DVD-writer to find out if the disc is a + or - format.

Personally, I use the +R discs simply because I booktype .. although I, on occasion, will use -R

when i started out i used -R, no reason, i just bought them. probably a 1000ish burns later thought i'd finally try out +R, just so i could booktype (which was daft as i've never had problems with playback due to compatibility), and now i just use whichever i pick up first..

catfreak said it all real well:)
i also started out with -r quite a few burns
i now use +r all the time for burns that are going out to friends and customers, booktyped -rom
don't ask why but i still burn all my master copies on -r, force of habit i expect, and the knowledge that i and my pc are the only things that come into contact with them

I also booktype the plus format into dvd-rom. Why,they are more compatable in more stand alones/game consoles/and pc drives. Far better success on my booktyped backups than my dash backups.

clu05: What's the brand name and model# of your DVD-RW drive?

Not all burners have this bit-setting capability. It all depends on how many different drives you plan those backups are going to be played on.

Everyone has their own favorite,it basically comes down to which format that your players prefer off your burner. You may have to give both a shot and see how your players react to them.

Is this it?
http://www.videoguys.com/pioneer.html

Pioneer needs a hacked firmware to achieve booktyping. Usually that's a last resort if you have several stand alones that will not play either your plus or dash backups.

Pioneers seem to favor the dash format.Best to try some good quality media from both formats and test them out in all those stand alones and pc drives that you plan on playing your backups in.They will tell you which format they favor,or you'll get a no disc inserted type of error.Go with the format that performs best for your needs. There's a lot of variations of burners and stand alones.

Booktyping is when you change the information from DVD+R to DVD-ROM

Also to add with catfreak's post:

It's all about compatability. You should be able to copy one of your own backups. But copying someone elses backups, that is where you may run into this compatability issue.Your DVD-RW or dvd-rom drive may not be able to recognize someone else's backups. If they booktyped their plus format to dvd-rom,you'd have a better shot at recognizing their backups.Vice-versa as well!
