Hey guys, I'm a newb in desperate need of help. I recently purchased a Sony Vaio laptop and in the process of trying to transfer large amounts of data from my desktop to the laptop I discovered that the DVD-RW drive will not read data DVD's burned from my desktop CPU. The drive will read standard video DVD's and even read some video DVD's burned on the same drive (desktop) the data DVD's are burned on. The media I'm using is quality and I've tried several different types.

Does anyone have any idea as to what might account for this? It's driving me absolutely crazy.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

are these disk DVD+RWs or DVD-RWs? if you are using the +RWs then try to booktype your disks as DVD-ROMs. read this thread, #12 will tell you about Booktyping: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/183136

If your drive can accept booktyping then I suggest your use DVD+RWs, and you can use DVDDecrypter, DVDInfo Pro or even Nero to set your Booktype! Once done it will make your disk more acceptable to most DVD players! Hope this helps.

IHoe, thanks so much for your response.

To be honest with you, I had yet to try DVD-RW or +RWs on the laptop. However, it appears that I was able to solve the problem.

Simply put, apparently the Matshita drive built-in to my laptop is not compatible with Nero (note: the Sony site says drives may not be compatible with burning software that uses packet writing--does Nero Burning Rom use pw?). I installed the burning software that was included with my laptop (Sonic RecordNow) on my desktop and the data DVDs I burned using that program are working beautifully.

Again, I really have no idea what I'm doing, so I'm not totally sure what accounts for the apparent incompatibility, but I'm thankful that the issue appears to be resolved. Either way, I thought I'd post a follow-up in case anyone else encounters such a problem.

Thanks again for your response. I really appreciate it.

I heard that Nero has a compatiblity problem with Roxio ..... it might have a compatibilty problem with Sonic, too. Although, I have both and both are fine. Maybe it's just not compatible with a Laptop!

easy solution (if you want to use Nero that is)... is to get rid if the horrid packet writing software - Nero's is called 'InCD' - all you need to do is install Nero WITHOUT InCD... problem solved !
