DVD+R freezing at initial screens

I recently began backing up my games, and a friend of mine suggested using +R media. I did this and all was well for a while, then one day the games stopped loading beyond their initial screens, for example the Capcom logo on Darkwatch, and on some the screen just goes black. I tried burning the games on -R and they work alright, although load times seem to take longer and cause awkward pauses in some games.
My friend brought over one of the +R discs that he made and it seemed to work fine.
His game and all of mine were burned with DVD Drectypter at 1x. I used a Fujifilm 8x DVD+R and he used a Memorex 16x DVD+R.
My quation is, would the difference in DVD+Rs make a signifigant difference in their running? Or is it possibly some issue with my burner that I don't know about?

I appreciate any help.

diffrent media brands seem to be more compatible with individual systems at times. Although, I've heard bad things about memorex media which is suprising when I read that they worked well on your system.
