It is more likely a problem with the quality of the media you are using or the speed at which you are burning.

Good quality media are Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden. Generally, burning slower yields better burns than burning faster. Many people never burn above 4X especially with less than the highest quality media.

First things first, the first thing you should do is try them in another standalone. Your friends, moms, brothers..etc. See if it is a compatibility issue with ur player. Then move on to what ladyboy said (which you should do anyhow) good quality media, slow burning speed. These will ensure good quality burns. also you wight check how many programs are running in the background while you encode them to ur harddrive. Good luck, ---zen-->

Now if the issues occur at the end of your backup, usually a reduced backup target helps. This keeps the outer edge from being burned. This area in poor quality media can be vulnerable to uneven dye. In the middle, then a lot more things:

Too much compression
Fragmented hard drive
Dirty laser lens in stand alone.
Burned too fast
Multi-tasking
And many,many more possibilities.

Dvd shrink is an excellent, free program. Downloading it can give you another ripping and compressing option to confirm issues like this.

I am not sure where those issues show up: Stand alone player or your pc DVD-RW drive. These backups with issues need confirmed.Use the DVD-RW drive that burned it,to playback on your pc using a playing program like windvd/powerdvd/etc.Look for those issues in the general vicinity of where they act up.

Confirm these issues like zenarrow posted. The more stand alones, the better they can verify those backups.

Majority of my experiences: Usually crappy media/too fast burn speed/ or a dirty laser lens on a stand alone is usually the culprit.

Tell us what drive is giving those issues.
