Hey guys,
On sites like bitburners.com, i look in the media reviews and they have graphs of media tests. Most of the graphs make the media look really really good. However i've tried using the same media and dvd writers as they do bt still i can't get graphs looking like theirs. What am i doing wrong?
It says stuff like "The Pioneer 109 did not like this disc at all. The PI Max has rised to 87..." 87, in all fairness, is an excellent PI Max for me, n i'm not sure i've ever had anything below that, and i've tried quite a few different combinations of drives/media/burning speeds etc.
For example, i've tried Verbatim DVD+R 16x MCC 04, at all speeds (seemed to prefer 16x best), booktyped to DVD-Rom, on the Liteon SHW-1635S, and unbooktyped on Pioneer DVR-110D, and my max PI Error Rate is normally in the 400's! The PI Failure rate is normally max 2/3/4, but can rise to about 8/10 on occasions. I've also used some Taiyo Yuden 8x DVD-R TYG02 (genuine) and have had similar results. So why are my graphs not as great as other people's? Can a low spec PC be a problem? Mine's not that low spec (1.6ghz, 512mb ram...) but would it affect my graphs? How do they get those graphs using the same media and dvd writers and speeds? Coz i've tried and i don't get the same results!!??
Cheers

That's odd. My Pioneer DVR-A09 averages 3 PI errors and 0 PO errors using Taiyo Yuden DVD+R 8x. Burners will vary, but getting over 400 with a Pioneer on Verbatim an TY is not normal. You should definately be getting under 20 PI average.
Burning at 16x will always result in higher errors. It is very CPU intensive. I always burn movies at 4x. Anything more is asking for trouble.
There is a chance that Pioneer drives like + media more than -. You could try some TY DVD+R and see if that helps. I buy Fujifilm DVD+R 8x MADE IN JAPAN. Make sure you DO NOT buy the ones made in Taiwan. Same goes for Sony if you find Sony DVD+R 8x.
Your PC specs are good enough and should not cause any burn problems. Just make sure you are not letting a lot of program run in the background. When you install something new on your PC, make sure it does not launch on startup. Also Defragment your HD before ripping a disc (NOT after). Defragment at least once every two weeks.

I've never used TY +Rs (haven't been able to get ahold of them in UK) bt i found that the results for my Verbatim 16x +Rs were much better at 16x than at 4x or 6x or 12x. For the Ty's i always burn at 4x since that seems to present the best results.
Here's one of the graphs that i got...admittedly, this isn't a great one for even my burns (i dno what's up with one of the spikes!!) :
[img]ftp://nickmoores@ftp.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/verbatim+R16x.PNG" border=0>
I barely have anything else running in the background when burning...normally just msn messenger in the system tray bt that's it. I even disable norton antivirus while burning. I format my hard drive quite frequently (about once a month), n i defrag it once a week. Normally have 300 meg of ram available just before i start a burn. So what's the problem?

actually i do use svp (well, blankdiscshop.co.uk, bt it's the same thing), I currently have about 60 Taiyo Yuden DVD-Rs left from them. I'm just looking for some TY DVD+Rs, bt SVP don't seem to do them so i ordered Verbatims...I was actually wondering if the Verb Taiyo Yudens were any gd, n it looks like the general response is yes.
I agree about ordering more to make up the P&P...the only problem i found was when i ordered twice as many Ridiscs for testing only to find out they were all rubbish!! :-P In other words, if you don't know if the disc is any good, don't buy lots of them!!! :-D
So can anyone figure out my rubbish scan problem??

cor, you read that lot quick!. svp do indeed do +R TY discs, but i don't buy those as they're like £46 for 100 - too steep. the -R are usually around £38 for 100. and my fave Verb TY are only £6.49 for 25 thus 26p each.
as i mentioned in 1st link in my sig, i looked into scans a little, but i hold very little interest/faith in them. I admit to being very blinkered in what media i buy, but i read as much about other media as i can. When it comes to scans, the only scan i hold faith in is a CRC scan - in my little world a disc either works/plays 100% fine, or it has corruption (ie CRC errors which in my experience correlates with skipping/freezing during playback). skipping/freezing can have other causes but every single disc i've had with those symptoms has shown up CRC errors under a CRC scan.
I don't often have to CRC scan btw, just when i buy a different type of disc, or as i say if i have the (luckily rare) skipping movie..
i just personally believe more in using real good media at the correct speed and burning/watching 1000s of the little fellas consistently. - ie that's how i determine quality along with using the experiences of 1000s of troubled logfiles on afterdawn on how not to do things :)

Hmm that's interesting to know. So what you're saying is that you don't really rely too much on the graphs to tell you whether the disc will play you're movies back or not? Fair enough - i guess i'm just worried because i've had a lot of bad experiences with movies not playing well (even with good media)!
Could you point me in the direction of these Taiyo Yuden +R's, because i dno if it's jst me being stupid, bt i can't find them on svp!!! :-P
Anybody else got any opinions on these graphs??
Btw, i'm about to put some Taiyo Yuden graphs up...

looks like you're right about the +R TY's (they were there yesterday). they must be updating the site. i only had a quick look otherwise i'll get tempted to buy more discs :)
That's right about how i feel about the scans. I'm one of those very distrustful ppl, if say, a disc let's me down i'll never trust it again UNLESS i can pinpoint the problem elsewhere. ie i've done about 1500+ Verbatim burns on one burner for instance and recently had a few skip on playback. further testing proved that the burner was the cause. i may well have been able to clean the lasers or whatever but as i say i'm distrustful so the only option was to replace the drive. then i CRC check a handful of discs on a new burner so i can trust it. the same holds true when i (rarely) switch disc types, i'll CRC check a few before i'm happy. because i now only use top notch media, keep everything up to date, defrag, no multitasking during burns, keep the target size at 4300MB ie away from edge of disc yada yada yada, oh and i watch lots of the burns just after they're burnt, i have a pretty good way of proving stuff works. as to other media out there i read up on the good, bad and ugly constantly to try and keep my knowledge up (as like in my sig, Verbatim DataLifePlus, Taiyo Yuden & Ritek G05 are the ONLY media allowed near my Burners) (though i've only used 50 G05's, but my buddies round here use them with confidence so at least i can say i tried some.

That sounds good...i may just keep to CRC Checking...i think any further scans will just get me more anxious!!! :-P
But just for interest here are some more scans i've just done
The first one is a Taiyo Yuden 8x (genuine) burnt at 4x :
And this one is the same media burnt at 8x :

A quick couple of questions also :
What speeds do Standalone DVD players read at?
For use with DVD Rebuilder, which is better - AnyDVD or DVD Decrypter? Everyone seems to use DVD Decrypter - is that because it's free, or are there other advantages to it over AnyDVD?
Thanks
