I just installed a NEC-3540A burner in my Dell. I used to have a TEAC but it was burning to slow with TY discs. Anyway, now the discs I burn will not play on my Panasonic DVD/VCR. I upgraded the firmware from 1.01 to 1.03. I see there is a 1.F1 and a 1.W7, will any of these help?
Thanks

I use X copy, DVDclone2, or Nero. They use to play fine on the Panasonic, but after changing the burner from the TEAC to the NEC they no longer will. They do however play fine on my other 3 players. I also have a VHS to DVD recorder. Those discs never did work in the Panasonic but worked in everything else. I am thinking it is a format (+R vs. -R) issue. If you have any ideas or upgrades I can do, please let me know.

Is it the same for +R and -R media? Nero will automatically set the booktype for +R media to DVD-ROM which should help in playing on some standalones. I don't know how the other progs you mention work with bitsetting. Other hacked NEC firmware will allow for setting booktypes on +R media. I have 3 NEC drives (2500, 3500, and 3540) and I have yet to meet the standalone in which disks burned by these drives won't play. Is it possible you are now burning disks at a higher burn rate and that may be the problem?

Yes it is the same Media (Taiyo Yuden 8x +R) from Super Media Store. Everything worked on the Panasonic until I changed the burner. Have you played yours on a Panasonic stand alone?

Yes, Model S29. You said you installed the NEC 3540 because the Teac was too slow. I assumed you met too slow burning. If you're burning above 4X that may be the problem, especially if the Panasonic is a little older and tempermental. Some of the older players like -R media a little better for whatever reason as well. If your burning at greater than 4x, try burning at 4x and see if that solves the problem.

Have you tried downloading any hacked firmware for the NEC that allows booktype bitsetting for +R media for the NEC? Is the 1.03 firmware you downloaded the NEC "stock" firmware or a hacked version? There are versions of the 1.03 firmware at http://www.micheldeboer.nl/firmware/ that allow for +R media bitsetting that will allow setting the booktype to DVD-ROM so that the Panasonic will think it's a pressed disk. Other than trying a different brand of media, I'm out of ideas. Maybe if the Panasonic is older, it just needs to be retired.
I believe the 1F1 and 1W7 firmwares are the ones for the Mad Dog rebadged NEC and probably should work. 1F1 and 1W6 allow for +R booktyping. I assume 1W7 does as well, but it isn't totally clear from the table. Just a caution. There is always a risk in flashing a drive.

laddyboy,
I did upgrade the firmware to 1.W7, but it did not change anything. As far as booktype bitsetting, that is all greek to me. If you think it will work, can you walk me through it or point me in a direction of some directions?
Thank you very much for your help.

If you're using Nero it should be automatically setting the booktype for +R media. -R media is not booktyped. I'm beginning to think the use of the TY media burned by the NEC is simply giving the Panasonic player a bellyache. I would try a different brand of media (verbatim, maxell, sony) and maybe even -R media just to see if that alleviates the problem. Do you have any friends with which you can exchange some blank media. Most people will readily exchange for TY. Just a disk or two to see if there is any change.

adyuga, sometimes booktyping +R media can help out a stubborn player. Download DVD Identifier, insert a +R burned disk, and determine whether your burner booktyped the burned disk as DVD-ROM.
http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/
If the booktype is still DVD +R then booktyping needs to be enabled for your burner which may include updating the firmware. The NEC 3540 only supports booktyping for DVD +R DL in the stock firmware. You need modified version 1.03 for booktyping +R media and for burning most DL media other than Verbatim. The 1.03 firmware can be found at this site: (click the 3540 on the left side to get a 3540 frame on the right) with the 3540 firmware choices.
http://www.micheldeboer.nl/firmware/
The filename is 103bt_rpc1.zip located in the modded section.
To enable the booktyping in DVD Decrypter:
1. Place Decrypter in ISO Write Mode.
2. Right click on the burner name in the Destination menu.
3. Select Change Book Type....
4. Click the NEC tab
5. In the Change For: menu, select Drive (for DVD +R Media)
6. In the New Setting: menu select DVD-ROM.
7. Click OK
8. Repeat for +RW media.
Personally I have yet to encounter a standalone player that won't play a +R disk. Perhaps there is something about this Panasonic player that's different. I can't say for sure.
