Hi, not sure if this is where I should be asking this so my apologies if it isn't...

I've been trying to save room on my computer by putting various files on to DVD-Rs. I first tried with a computer game which i downloaded from the internet about 3.5GB. Using the drop and drag CD+DVD software, I sucessufully made a data disc ( i think?) it popped out of the CDrom and it had the files written on to it (well as far as I could tell-it had the line that usually indicates where the data stops). I pop it back into my cdrom and it just spins and spins never stopping, never allowing me to even play it (when i tried manually)or even view the files. I then tried it on my friend's new labtop. it worked perfectly. Then i put one of the files from this game (an application file 435mb) and onto a blank CD and burned it. i put it back into my computer and was able to open it up and view it. so I'm thinking that my CDrom is having problems reading DVD-Rs?? or is it something else? according to the microsoft web site "For files too large to fit on a CD, you can copy files to a recordable DVD (DVD-R or DVD+R) or rewritable DVD (DVD-RW or DVD+RW). However, Windows XP does not support copying to a DVD, so you have to use DVD authoring software."
yes i have windows XP. any advice? I'd appreciate it!

thanks
jim

Hello. If it is a CD burner that you are using, it will not read or write to DVD+/-R(W). Your friend may have a DVD ROM or burner so that's why it's working on his laptop. Check to see if in fact you have a DVD burner installed cause without it you can only write to or read CD. DVD burners can read/write to CD's though, but not the other way around. Hope that helps!

thanks for the email but unfortunately it is a DVD-RW drive. i just went to my computer and check and it says DVD-RW Drive (D:)CD drive.
and the software as well is CD+DVD software. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Where does it say "...DVD-RW Drive (D:)CD drive"?

What software are you using?

Is it DVD or CD you are trying to burn to?

if i look at the icon on my desktop it says shortcut to CD drive
if i click on "my computer" it shows the same icon and says DVD-RW Drive (D:)CD drive. and on the actual front of the drive is says DVD Rom/r/rw and compact disc high speed rewriteable. so i'm pretty sure it's both. it wasn't a DVD or CD i was trying to burn. it was just various file for a video game. i was just tying to make a data disc with those files so that i could wipe the game from my computer, and if, in the future i wanted to reinstall it, I could, from the disk that i was trying to make.

what speed did ypu copy the game?if the game worked on your friends laptop then he probably has a better dvd drive than you.maybe by burning the game at a slower speed will allow it to be played on your drive.if you have a DVD-RW instead of a dvd-+rw then you probably have an older model dvdrw drive.if this is the case then updating the firmware might increase the performance of the drive and would be a good idea.im sure if you can burn to DVD-R that your drive can certainly read them.

I copied the game at the slowest speed possible. My computer is a 2003 model, but maybe that means my cd-rom drive is old?? how do I update the firmware??
thanks

check the manufactuer's website.it would probably be under support or downloads on the site.once you get the firmware it should tell how to install the firmware on the site or in a readme file when you download the firmware.
