I've had my solderless DMS4 chip set up on my PS2 for a while, and it seemed to work fine when I first installed it. However, lately it seems like it only works when it feels like it.
The other day, I burned copy of Rainbow 6: Lockdown, popped it in the PS2, and it worked fine. I played and beat the first mission. Then, today, I wanted to continue playing, but then the game would not boot at all. First, it would go to the little Sony PS2 hardware manager screen, (the one with the memory cards and such) and it would show a disk there. If I selected the disk, it'd load a bit, then say, "Insert a PS2 format disk."
So...... after spending a frustrating half-hour trying it over and over with the PS2 in different angles like I was trying to fix the TV reception, I pretty much gave up for now.
This has happened several times before as well.
It's a version-7 PS2 with Toxic OS 0.3.
My guess is it could be a few things:
1) The laser is dying (oh please god no!)
2) Something's off with the modchip. (I kind of doubt it since it works sometimes, and not others. Seems more like a laser problem...)
3) The DVD+Rs I'm using aren't up to par. (The brand is Philips. That's the only DVD brand I have used so far.)
On to my questions:
1) Exactly what would I need to do to replace the laser? If I need to solder stuff... well, I don't have the hands for that.
2) Did anyone have a problem like this? What did they do to fix it?
3) Are DVD-Rs better to use than DVD+Rs? Or does it matter as long as the brand is a good one?
Thanks for the time ;)
