I've recently struggled with bad copies or burns, getting several coaster's something I thought and as told here by some is attributed to bad (TDK DVD-R printable 8x) media. Now, I've recently picked up a few 50 packs of SONY DVD-R 8x on sale at BestBuy and began to see again this coaster or slug (As I like to call em) trend all over again? Now here at the forum aside from suggesting good media, It's also suggested that you burn at 4x speed. After some tinkering around with some settings in NERO Recode 2 I found out that after backing my origianl disk up to my hard drive using SHRINK, That the "Slow Burn Mode" alone in NERO Recode2 has produced my most consistent best quality DVD copies to date burning at 8x which is reflective of the SONY DVD-R disc speed of 8x. In my experience thus far I feel that 4x media may help create read error on disc that have a higher burn speed. I also noticed from my 1st Blank DVD-R which were TDK 4x I had no trouble with coasters cause like the 8x media disc then I burned movies at 4x speed. Chime in I'd like to know what members think. I'm simply saying your media speed should perhaps be the be your drives burn speed for best overall results.

you always better off burning at a slower speed long term ,less read errors, freezing etc. even with 8x media .what is more important is the quality of media your using the best being Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim ,if your going to use sony get the DVD+R format that are made in japan they will code out as Taiyo Yudens so burn your 4x media at 4x DONT over burn it .the 8x media i burn at 6x or 4x to be on the safe side. but some members burn them at 8x ,if it works for you your good to go BUT my advice would still be to burn the 8x media at a slower speed than rated

My burn quality is excellent, and again no coasters. I asked that some members here try it. I tried the 4x speed with 8x media, just has not been consistent enough for me. For every 5 successful burns I was getting as many as three slugs...SH*t. The difference on 8x and doing sometime back to back copies is amazing. I also see little or no digitized images or freezes like when burning at 4x. Both of my burn drives are SONY DRU-800A and the OEM DW-22A. Oh and did I mention speed. Using this mode (Slow Burn) in NERO Recode2 I'm making flawless copies with menu in as little as 8 min. I also like the SONY media too. Press play in any DVD player I have and the DVD plays without all the searching or swirling noise. SONY 8x DVD-R is good stuff. I have the SONY DVD+R too, but they don't play in everything. When I say I've tried, I'm talking going throuh a hundred spindle pack previously and getting like 9 to 15 slugs. All that has changed with the use of 8x speed on 8x media using Recode2 slow burn.

According to this statement I have a 16x burner and should then burn my 16x media at that rate, I do not think this would make for very good backups. My two cents.

I have read that one should burn the manufacture's RATED speed of the media to avoid write errors. This has been discussed many times on different forums. I believe this is also why there is a disclaimer on the faster media pertaining to warranty with regards to updating one's firmware on the slower burners?

I've come to the conclusion that the optimal burn speed depends on your burner and the media that you're using. For example .. My BenQ loves to burn ALL media at 8x and gets the best scans at this speed. My Plextor (712) burns best at 4x (and mostly gets the CD jobs) while the LiteOn (1633) varies from 2x -8x depending on the brand of disc. Using the Verbatim 16x (the only 16x media I've tried) the BenQ gets nearly identical scans at 8x and 16x burning speeds.

Also let it be noted that it's been some time now since I've created a disc that couldn't be played on all DVD players that tried to play it

I think that as long as you are using first class media, burning speed importance is vastly overrated!

paradyme if you would booktype thoses sonys DVD+R to DVD-ROM that will make them more compatable with all standalone players and also the sony DVD+R (MIJ)will code out as Taiyo Yuden which is some of the best media on the market unlike the DVD-R

My burn quality is excellent. What are you basing this on. I have done a lot of experimenting with burning quality with Nero speed test. With that said some burners will burn fine faster than 4X. But until you run disks threw Nero cd-dvd speed (disk quality test) you really have nothing to base your facts on. Example I have sony DRU710A burning Verbatum +R 8X (MCC003). Tested at 4X threw 8X. 6X had the least amount of errors on disk using Nero cd-dvd speed (Disk Quality Test). Some one had already mention it just depends on your burner. The reason most suggest burning at 4X is becouse on alot of burners 8X plus the errors go threw the roof. I bought into it I must admit scraped old sony drive 4X burner for 16X it will burn at 16X but there again the errors are threw the roof. Plextor and maybe the Pioneer drives seem to be the only ones where you can burn at 12X and get away with good burns. The brand of media make a huge diffrence after a few coasters you will buy the better media. For Sony drives i have used Tiyo Yuden,Verbatum, and Maxell all burn great and play great. All of these brands of media are listed on Sony's website as supported media as well as TDK.

Good Luck

hi all~ :)

well, arniebear pointed me to this particular thread and after reading all the comments, i will have to agree entirely with arniebear AND catfreak regarding burn speeds :)
Quote:
I think that as long as you are using first class media, burning speed importance is vastly overrated!
as stated by catfreak, i could not have stated it ANY better~

it's just a general "rule of thumb" here and you will see MANY MANY members suggest ONLY burning @4x, well, i have long since "broken" this rule of thumb for well over 2 years now, at least on MY setup, i get better scans burning @8x on my 8x rated media than i do using 4x~ :) as some of the other members have mentioned, running it through nero's cd-dvd speed program will attest to this...

bottom line is, as long as you are using A TOP NOTCH media, such as Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim...and even the Maxells' that are made in japan, i burn ALL these 8x rated media @ 8x with FLAWLESS results, my testing has shown that if i burn @4x on these GOOD QUALITY medias, the scans ARE NOT BETTER than when i burn @8x...i use Sony drives (which are rebadged Liteons, the SOHW 1633S & 1693S to be exact), pioneer dvr-109, nec 3520a, and now my recently acquired Benq 1640~ :) when using my Taiyo Yudens and Verbatims, i burn @8x 100% of the time, the scans are great~ no problems, no pixellation/freezing/freezing/etc., i've used the 16x rated TYs as well as the 16x Verbs MCC004 DVD+R format, BUT, i keep my burn speeds @8x on my 16x speed rated media, this is true across the board, at least for ME personally...

so, assuming you are using GOOD/HIGH quality media, from MY experience, i burn @ the rated speed of the manufacturer, with the ONLY exception of the 16x rated media which i burn @8x, i personally feel there is NEVER a need to burn @16x, while you might get a perfect burn @16x, it is VERY possible with good media, i just don't recommend it~ :) on the dozen or so in my "testing" batch where i burned 16x rated media @ 16x...quality scores were from 96-98, which is pretty darn good; however, when burnt @8x on these 16x media, quality scores were slightly higher being in the 97-100 quality score range :) perhaps that doesn't say much, but, i consider anything w/ a 97+ score "good enough" for me~ :)

so, as everyone else in here has already noted their OWN burning speeds for whichever media they prefer, just continue to burn @ the speeds YOU feel comfortable with and have had the best results with...i totally agree with the "burn everything @4x" is highly overrated and i haven't followed that suggestion for awhile now, my burns are no worse, quality wise, than anyone's burns @4x, and i do MINE @8x~ :P go figure...

good luck everyone~ :)

Thanx everyone for your replies, It was good to hear that people are open to different burn speed ideas. Considering the SONY drives I own. I think I've struck my nich. 8x is what works for me and this what I base my opinions on. I never claimed to be an authority. Just throwing some positive experiences around for all to discuss. I still say that if anyone here cares to try out my burn mode of choice in NERO Recode2 (Slow Burn)you would be pleasantly surprised. Hey what do you guys do for covers? Are you using actual DVD cases to store your movies or do use CD covers, standard or slim? The NERO cover art feature has also been instrumental in storing cover images. And the internet has been a great place to retrieve photos and cover art needed for my copies.
