Backing Up DVDs (Space Problem)

Hey, since many dvd's take more than one 4.7gb disc to backup without sacrificing picture quality (even without menus/extras etc), is there anyway I can use two 4.7 discs to back up a movie that works?
If not, then I suppose I'd have to buy those expensive 8.5gb discs. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Yea I use those two. Thx cat. I have one more question before I try it:
By splitting the 8.5gb dvd into two 4.7gb dvds as instucted on the site, can/should I put menus on both 4.7gb split dvds? I don't mind losing menus/extras, but of coarse it'll be nice to have as well.

Ya, menus on both disks is good if you want to choose special features because your may end up putting some SF's on one disk and others on the other.
CloneDVD2 also does a great job of splitting disks and you will be equip't to do DL also when the price of media comes down.

One last question! This may be a dumb question to ask, but I'm really not sure heh:
In the case that a dvd isn't encrypted, is there any point or benefits to using dvd decrypter, then shrink dvd, to back up a dvd? Or should I just use DVD Shrink? I heard using dvd decrypter, then shrink dvd is the best way to back up a dvd, but I assumed that's only in the case of the dvd being encrypted.

VERY few DVDs are not encrypted. But I've heard that you don't need decrypter or Anydvd running if you ever do find such a movie. Backups of backups also have not encryption if you backed up the original when using AnyDVD. I'm not sure about this with a decryptor backup since I never tried. Most AD members here are more informed on dvd decrypter/shrink questions. I don't compress (I didn't think that shrink split, I thought it just shrunk...) my backups and decrypter is still pretty good but is running into problems with some of the newer CSS protections. I've been a die-hard fan of the CloneDVD/AnyDVD combination ever since DVD-X-Copy died.

i haven't had a encryption problem with DVD Shrink yet though. Burned some new movies that are original copy like crash, tupac ressurection etc, last samurai. I may run into one soon heh.

AD members correct me if I'm wrong but I think I've read that Decryptor got shut down because it is in the USA, so no more updates. And Shrink's author got a real job and works for Nero now so no more updates. Use them till you run into a decryption or DVD authoring wall too often. Everone will have to switch eventually but it will be hard for many who have had a love affair with both free programs for so many years.

DVD Derypter's authot (UKLightning) lives in the UK and is involved in another program (with no decryption device) called Imgburn. Really, the only reason that you need DVD Decrypter along with DVD Shrink is that Shrink has no burning engine.
I still use DVD Decrypter and don't care if it's never updated since I also have AnyDVD running at all times.
Also, Gambit086, I've used NeroVisionExpress3 quite often to split a DVD onto two discs .. movie on one and the extras (with menus) on the other.
One last point, DVD Shrink's author (ddlooping) does work for Nero, thus the resemblence between Shrink and Recode

ah i just realized shrinkdvd doesnt allow u to burn the menu if I re-author (to split dvds). It has to be the whole dvd. It can burn the menu but there would be no button function according to what it says.
I might just buy myself some 8.5gb blank discs
PS.. i just burned Van Helsing using only shrinkdvd. It had some kind of decryption status..few letters and numbers. Still burned and worked fine though.

Or just get the CloneDVD/AnyDVD combo purchase deal for splitting & getting menus on both disks. Eventually, as I said above, everyone will have to migrate to a new backup software.
