Here's some guides:
http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/index.html

You'll need DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter and both are free. These are no longer updated so a background ripper called AnyDVD can help these programs rip off the newer encryptions like the sony arccos encryption..If you have nero6,that also works out great to burn.

Original dvds come in 2 sizes: The small, low budget DVD-5 and the more common DVD-9 which usually is crammed full of bonus features.

I use DVD Shrink, and set it up to auto burn with Nero on 90% of my original rips. DVD Shrink rips and compresses to fit on a blank DVD-5 disc.It has no burn engine, but can burn with nero/dvd decrypter/and CopyToDVD.
This is my main combo and works well, unless you run into the sony arccos encryption-then I activate AnyDVD by slysoft in the background.

Dvd decrypter is a more powerful ripper and has 2 modes:
File mode is for those DVD-9 originals and backing to DVD-5 blanks.Rip in file mode and fish out the ISO with DVD Shrink to compress and burn with any of those 3 burn programs I listed.

Dvd decrypter also has the ISO mode. This works for a 1:1 copy, and no compression is needed.Very good program for those smaller DVD-5 originals onto a blank DVD-5 or back those DVD-9 movies onto blank dual layer media. You'll have to fish out the MDS files for that mode. Quicker than DVD Shrink because of no compression.

Nero oem is all I use.Usually comes with a new burner drive, but you can go to Nero and download a free trial.

Dvd decrypter and DVD Shrink are free, and very good programs.AnyDVD has a free trial. It is a highly recommended program for both dvd and cd ripping. It runs in the background so no extra step involved.

Some other tips:Quality burner and quality media can save you many headaches. It's no big deal to burn a dvd,but can be problems on those standalone players. 4x burn speed and refrain from mult-tasking. Good Luck

saugmon gave you a nice intro to get started. I like spending the money and buying the combo deal of CloneDVD2 and AnyDVD.

Better if you don't mention rentals. There are many, including me, who won't help you beyond terse politeness because we don't consider it ethical. We backup movies we bought so our originals stay in pristine condition. And we don't want AD to get shut down because it becomes a pirate's island. No dis intended.
