Ripping speeds slow, need advice on what to do!

I just recently purchased a new Gateway laptop and it came with a cheesy dvd-burner(QSI DVD+-RW SDW-082). I want to back up my extensive dvd collection, some hard to find and this drive just doesn't cut it.

My question is what is the best thing to do as far as a new configuration.


I have been shopping around for a new dvd rom drive to increase ripping speed, but have been having trouble finding an external one and one that isn't way overpriced.

I also have been reading up on some hacked firmware that can increase ripping spead, this seems to be the main problem by the way.

I also looked into an internal drive with an external drive case since those seem to be way cheaper.

Any advice on this would be great as far as increasing burning and ripping speed.
