Hi, I'm relatively new to encoding in divx formats and have recently been converting alot because I now have a dvp642 and it allows me to put many tv show episodes on one dvd+r. Xvid seems to give me better quality than other divx formats. Following others instructions average 45-50 min video down to 350 mb. I have several questions however. I have never transfered a full movie sized file 1 1/2, 2 , or 2 1/2 hours. Is there a rule of thumb to basically follow here for maximum quality for different lengths of video? Do I just multiply: i.e. 45min x2= 1 1/2 hrs; 350mb x2= 700mb; or 2hrs=aprx 933mb and so on?
Another question is why xvid is so superior to divx5(or at least to me it seems)?

XviD isn't a DivX format. Both XviD and DivX are MPEG4 part2 implimentations. I think it is fair to say that XviD is the better implimentation, however you could always try DivX 6. Also the fact is that they aren't the only MPEG4 codecs available, there is Nero Digital (Ateme), HDX4, libavcodec, etc.

As for file sizes, if you were to encode at the same horizontal resolution then typically the movie would have less pixels than the TV ep. Say 640x272 vs. 640x480 in the case of 2.35:1 vs 4:3. There are other factors like how compressible it is.
