Nero seems to burn DVDs somewhat eratically for me. The burner is a Sony DRX-500UL. The Sony can read the DVD fine but my Philips 720 DVD player reads only about 70% of the DVD I make. I use DVD+RW HP and various other +RW -R and +R blanks.
I saw a posting that reccomended uding the DVD-ROM choice with dates file set for current date. That worked most of the time but not for all. I use Nero 5.5.10.7b.
The way I get my files ready to write, I use DVDXCopy and kill it when it asks for a blank to write.

I guess I should have explained that I am using a combination of methods to get the files that need writing. I use DVDXCopy usually, if I need to split a larger DVD. I use SmartRipper if it only takes one (DVD5). The resultant files work fine when written to media and played on the same DVD drive as burned them but fail sometimes (some work, some fail) on the Philips 724 player. Since the files can be burned and played successfully sometimes, and even the same type media works on some burns, there has got to be a better way to get more sure results.

I have RecordNow DX directly from Veritas courtesy of my Sony DVD burner. I tried it on a couple of +RW DVDs and it too failed. Is there a differrence in the burner between the DX version and the Max version? I asked the same of the support line for the Veritas SW and awaiting thier reply. I will also check out the Prassi PrimoDVD.

Another variable in the puzzle, the DVD player. Just for grins I opened up the Philips DVD 724 to find an ATA DVD drive and associated electronics to make it a home TV player. I tried subsituting a regular PC DVD drive to no avail. Obviously the firmware or the DVD drive was set up to respond to special commands. I did buy a second identical unit and retested all the failing DVD disks. All the failing +RW disks now will play but the +-R disks had mixed results. I swapped the lesser calibrated drive for the better one, all the better to return the lesser. I STILL have a large problem with +-R disks that neither this new drive nor a new Sony 715 were able to play. Maybe it is time to try a differrent Sony DRX-500.
