I am on stage three of the ripping process using smartripper, DVD2AVI amd TMPGE. Everything was working great until I got to the TMPGE program. I selected the .d2v file for the video source but it wouldn't accept it. It didn't even recognize it in the "save as" box. I dragged and dropped it there and it said:
"File H:\Riding in car with boys\vts_02.d2v" cannot open, or unsupported"
What did I do wrong? I run XP home Ed.

This is a usuall problem, you simply don't have DVD2AVI.VFP where your TMPGEnc.EXE is, or you have an incorrect version.
I Suggest you re-download DVD2AVI, unzip it to exactly where your TMPGEnc is, and re-create the D2V and WAV files, I guarntee if you do it right, it will work.

Thank you Sefy. The first thing I need to do in this forum is read before I ask. The information was right there in front of me. I also went to your website and downloaded
the "original official guide". It has a gold mine of information. I am going to download
ASPI 4.60 Build 1021 for XP.

Hi Sefy,I did exactly what you told me but I get the same message. I do actually see the .d2v file now so that's an improvement, but still the same old message. Any help you could give me would be appreciated. I am going to keep the wave file and the .d2v file.

I went in to the environmental settings and changed the priority of the file readers but still the same message. I don't have a clue. It has got to be in the TMPGEnc program because everything else is exactly as it should be. Help!!! LOL

Ok, now I am wonder if all the files are in the right place. Where should the .dll files(P3Package etc.) be? system or system32? I am desperate.Do I have the right plugins or all that I need? Is environmental settings the same as global settings in TMPGEnc? If I can't get this program to work, is there another one like it? I really like smartripper and dvd2avi.

ok the files that come with tmpgenc stay in the folder you installed it too
as for the cannot open or unsupported bit heres what i do and it works every time so it may fix your problem
download and install dvd2svcd then once you have done that try again to open the file in tmpgenc again, dunno why it works so dont ask. get dvd2svcd here http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_rippers/dvd2svcd.cfm

I finally fixed the problem. I got rid of DVD2AVI v.1.77 and downloaded DVD2AVI v.1.76. It worked perfectly. I still have two questions. On TMPGEnc, do you use settings for interlace or non-interlace(progressive? Do you use bottom field first or top field first. On the instructions I downloaded the first example shows interlace with bottom field first but three pages over it shows non-interlace(progressive) with top field first. I love your guide Sefy, but I got a little confused on that(LOL).

All the settings in the guides are defaults, they change when TMPGEnc itself changes it, when you load a movie it trie to detect the correct settings which are required for it.
PS: Rather strange you had problems with 1.77.3 of DVD2AVI, I use it since it came out and no problem yet.
NOTE: I Just updates my guides, added Alcohol 120% / burnatonce and updated VCDwizard section.
