I just got a brand new laser drive for my PS (with a mod chip) because my last one broke (or rather I broke it in a fit of rage) The new one works fine for all my normal games but on my backups, whenever it loads up a cutscene it sounds like its having trouble reading the disc and the cutscene wont play properly and the load times become horrendously long.

I know its not the discs because they still work fine on a PSX Emulator for PC.

Yeah I can understand those fits of rage. How are you burning your backups? Here's a guide: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/236278 I burn my PSX backups at 4x with Alcohol %120 and have had no problems.

All my backups are burned at about 4x speed using Nero, and they used to work perfectly on my old system, I think I might have gotten a defective Laser Drive =( I'll try burning a new game using that method you showed me

Yeah don't be so quick to blame the hardware. Nero works alright for backups. Alcohol %120 is the idiot's guide to burning PSX games. If I can do it so can you. I'm special!!!

It's just odd the cutscenes skip and the game takes forever to load and in most cases just crashes on my PSX but when I play it using a PSX emulator on the computer it runs perfectly fine. And they ran on my old Laser drive just fine before. I'll try burning a new game tomorrow when I get some more CD's but I have a feeling it will just end up the same.

EDIT: Do you know how to get rid of the "Please insert Playstation disc error"? it's really annoying

By burning it correctly. The original disc could be scratched, causing reading problems. Set the read speed at 1x, if you have the original. The PSX emulator is only as good as the plugins you're running. Just because a game boots fine on emulator, doesn't necessarily mean anything. I had problems like this with FF7, and Mega Man Legends 1 and 2.

What brand of CD-R's do you recommend? Maxell? Fujifilm?

Well I use Memorex, which just about anyone will tell you is crap. Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim are excellent. You should be okay with most store bought brands like Sony, Maxell, or TDK. Avoid crap like Imitation, Duraband (Wal-Mart brand), etc.

It should work, if not then maybe the disc is scratched or dirty. Also check ignore read errors and fast skip error blocks if you're using Alcohol.

Well that didnt work, so i'm ripping a different game and making sure I checked the ignore read error & Skip error blocks.
For the burning part should I just use the Playstation customization option or what?

Ripping at 1x speed takes a long time....

Yeah it does, but it's the only way to ensure a successful copy. You can use PSX or customize, probably better to use PSX, I shoulda mentioned that before.

Do you know if its possible to readjust the PSX laser to stop getting constant "Please insert PLAYSTATION CD-Rom" errors?(this occurs with every game I own including Originals)

EDIT: On the ripping part of Alcohol 120% should the Read Sub-Channel from current disc be checked or unchecked?

Definitely should be checked. I know very little about laser fixes or adjustments, only that it is more common in v.9 PS2's and later, especially the slimline. I doubt the laser is the problem.

I'm not using a PS2 i'm using an original gray PS :P

EDIT: that backup didnt work either, it just starts making the loading sound then it stops and goes to the Memory Card/CD Player screen

EDIT2: In the burning part should it be RAW DAO or DAO/SAO?

Datatype: Playstation, Write Method: DAO/SAO, Write Speed: 4x, Read Speed: 1x, Read Subchannel data from disc: checked, Fast Skip error blocks: checked, Ignore Read Errors: checked. If it's clone CD: load CCD file, CDRWIN: load cue file, anything else load the game image itself. These settings have never failed me for backing up originals or copying a copy. What game are you trying to back up?

Not really unless you take it apart, which I strongly urge you not to do. Unless you know what you're doing, most likely you'll just end up destroying your PSX. Here's some PSX modchip info: http://teammodders.com/psx_mc.php?ex=4

Yeah maybe it is the hardware. That's usually the last thing I'd blame, but I don't know what else it could be, unless you have a cheap modchip.

I have no idea what Modchip is in my PS, it was put in like 6-7 years ago by my brothers friend. Is there some way to check?

YES!!!! I finally figured out why my backups wont work, its not the laser drive or the discs its the half busted mod chip thats sitting in my PS, 2 of the 4 cords connected to the mod chip have just about fallen off and probably account for why it will start backups but decides to screw up......now all I need is a new modchip, any suggestions? Playstation model # is 5501

http://teammodders.com/psx_mc.php?ex=4 I know nothing of PSX modchips. Teammodders.com is who I sent my PS2 to for modding. Those are probably good, they don't carry crap chips. Their PS2 modchip service starts at $20, plus the cost of the chip.
