The laser turns off when you open it up.

The light beam will not cause skin cancer, not unless you expose yourself to it for hours on end.

It will however cause irreversible damage to the eyes.

The visible and non visible radiation will cause damage that will either leave you blind, or have blind spots in your vision.

The lifting of the lid on a factory standard unit will cause the laser to turn off.

This however does not happen if you are using a flip lid, such as supplied to work in conjunction with swap magic disks.

These lids bypass the safety mechanism along with the copy protection to allow you to boot copy games.

After finding this out, I went down the mod chip route, as my kids were using it.

Iv figured out a nice sulution to a fliptop without buying it , once i read wat u guys told me , i got an idea . since cog swaping using swap tool damages the tray , i decided to take the top off and leave the switch off as well, unscrew te top part of the CD drive and that works as a fliptop basicly , i find it much easier and realiable as well , exept for somtimes theyre likes a 30% chance that u put the disc in a bit incorectly and the disc doesnt spin.... so for u cog swaper's out theyre that hav had theyre warnty expired , try this

NOTE:the lid has a peice of metal on it that is magnitised to the thing that holds the disc , so it will stay on firmly
