Hello,
I have recently joined this forum after browsing here and finding it to be both helpful and friendly and I was wondering if anyone can help me with a problem that i cannot solve.
I have used DVD Shrink successfully now for a couple of years and I love it and I have also found that the TDK +R media to be just about the best with very few problems.
The trouble that I am having is that when I rip, shrink and copy a movie to a disc I find that I cannot make a copy of that copy and on readinf into this I think that when I rip and shrink the movie I am probably removing a file that is neccessary in the coping of a movie, is this correct and if so can anyone tell me which file i am deleting and if when using DVD Shrink can I simply add the file to the movie and so that I can copy this copied disc down the road should a friend want a copy. Make sense?...
All the best,
Doug. "doorpro"

i would suggest using dvd decryptor in the ISO-> Read mode. it will extract the iso from the dvd. it will create an iso and a mds file on your hard drive.
give that a try instead of shrink

Try what enrage states, use DVD Decrypter in iso read mode, the open your mds file and use iso write mode. You have already compressed your DVD there is no reason to run it through Shrink again.

Any help? I am going to try another copied DVD from my collection just to make sure that this isnt a one off.

@doorpro

It sounds like a disc issue to me. What speed are you burning these at? How old are these copies? Are they scratched up at all, dirty?

Many problems trying to recopy a copy ends up being the process or the brand of blank media used to make the first copy. Since its a copy and not encrypted anymore, just try a straight disc copy with something like Nero or RecordNow Max if you have either. There is no need to actually use a decrypting program again. Also check the disc you are trying to copy and see if it is dirty or damaged in any way. I have heard DVDFab decrypter has worked well on scratched copies. You might try that also.

doorpro,
Download DVDinfoPro (free): http://www.dvdinfopro.com/
Now do a CRC Read test on the burned movie preferably using your DVD-Rom drive if you have one. The errors you received means the burned disk has some bad parts. If DVDinfoPro confirms the bad errors then you will have to do the movie over again. I always use that program after every burn to verify if the disk has errors on it

All the discs are clean and on very good media TDK+R to be exact and I have tried different burn speeds and the movies that I am trying to copy are all newish and in A1 condition. It isnt the media and my burner is a Plextor 504A which is one of the best and I have never had even a hcikup from it.

Ok,
just completed a CRC test on two movies that i burned using DVDinfopro and they both passed the test with flying colors. No Bad sectors or susoect sectors so i now know that the media is fine.

Here are 2 possible ways to make a copy of a copy:

Using Nero: http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=45497

Using DVD Decrypter: http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=48358

I have also found that the TDK +R media to be just about the best with very few problems.
If you can't re-rip your own backups, that is a problem!

Do you have the MID code/s for some of those TDK plus backups?

Check some of those TDK backups throughout your collection and see how many different MID codes you get.You just may have trouble re-ripping the TDK cmags.

Lots of cmags in TDK plus format, but not all of their media is made by cmags. Cmags burn ok on my benqs, but stand alones do have a harder time playing them.I also do a lot of re-rips and I wouldn't even consider trying to re-rip a cmag.

Unrecovered read errors: Usually media quality, but after trying 6 dvd-rw drives now, some of them will also give read errors even using quality taiyo yuden media. Burning too fast can cause read errors, and very difficult to backup.

Quality is the ultimate factor when it comes to re-ripping backups.Quality drive as well as quality media. You want that first backup copy to have as few errors as possible in order to re-rip later.

You've got a quality drive.
Check for an up to date firmware version on your Plextor 504A.

Saugmon,

hello and thank you for your input on this annoying little problem. You know, everything you say makes sense and through all of the discs that I have tried through the years i have found the TDK's to be the most reliable but I must also add that there's one thing that i didnt even think of trying and that is slowing the burn speed down, who knows that may make for a better copy which may be able to be copied.

Thanks again,
Doug.

I usually burn at 4x unless I do a backup while I leave, then set it for 2.4x and let it auto shut down.

I tried re-ripping one of those Yuden000-T02s that was burned at 2.4x and couldn't. Burning at 4x speed I have no problem.I really have to watch my burn settings on them, because they will burn successfully at 16x even though they are rated at 8x speed.

Majority of my re-rips are on the fly-using my dual drive pc and is also trickier, but no problem for me using my formula of quality:Media/burner/programs/and 4x burn speed max!

My single drive pc,using DVD Decrypter in Mode ISO read and Mode ISO write is by far the fastest, and easiest way to re-rip backups.

I'm curious to the MID codes of your tdks. The only TDK I have used is the +2.4x RW.

I'd almost bet you have several different MID codes in them and you may be able to re-rip some of them, but not all of them.

Use Nero infotool/dvdidentifier/or dvdinfopro to find the MID codes.

I use DVD Shrink all the time and have never had this problem. What software are you using to burn the copy? I use Nero 6 OEM and it works just fine. I have also used the Gearworks burn engine which I believe is part of DVD X-Copy with the same result. Whats weird is that if you try to copy anything but the original copy with Nero 6, it won't let you copy it yet it's engine burns just fine when using DVD Shrink. I don't even install DVD X-Copy anymore or try to burn DVDs with Nero. That's how good my copies are with DVD Shrink. I only have Nero installed because DVD Shrink needs Nero's engine to burn! I don't even like to make CDs with Nero as I get way too many errors. I use Roxio 6 for CDs. These two programs will co-exist as long as you don't try to install In-CD. Nero won't let you install it as long as Roxio is installed and will crash your computer if Roxio is installed after Nero In-CD.
When I use DVD Decrypter, I process the files it makes with DVD Shrink with no problems. Just open the files and click backup. That's all there is to it. I've even burned converted high quality AVIs to DVD and again the quality is outstanding. I use DVD Santa or Win AVI to do the conversion and DVD Shrink to make the DVD from the files they make.
Usually I re-author and just burn the main title. I don't give a hoot about directors cuts or any of that crap, I just want a quality DVD. Pop it in the DVD-Rom drive and away it goes. I use Power DVD 5 and I am very happy with the results.

Sincerely,
theonejrs

I use quality media that is on sale. Last sale I hit was staples fuji sale for 30 cents each. The +8x,made in japan fuji are taiyo yuden with MID code of Yuden000-T02. Sale before that was Office depot brand +8x coded Ritek-r03.Also 30 cents each. Sony +1x-8x,made in japan are also among my favorites.Oops, forgot about the japanese hitachi maxell +8x and the verbatim data life plus +8x. All those brands, except ritek and verbatim, are made in Japan. The japanese media Is was I look for on the wrappers.

doorpro,

Right now I have Memorex+R 8x, Maxell+R 8x, GQ-R 8x and Sony+R 8x. The Sonys automatically burn at 12x so I try to buy them when they are on sale. Usually about $10 for 25 at Compusa. I have to believe that the problem is the version of Nero being used. I remember now that I had an older version of Nero installed and it would not copy from the copy! Also I only install the burning software (the first item on the custom list) I scrap everything else. Haven't had a problem burning any type of disk since.

Sony is okay, but never let Memorex or Maxell anywhere near your burner.

This is my personal experience, but when I bought a spindle of 15 Memorex, 12 of 15 were coasters.

I would have to disagree regarding the Maxell media, at least those that are MIJ or MIT. They carry MID codes of Ritec R03 or Maxell 002. I have not a coaster in over a hundred burns with them. Booktyped DVD-Rom and excellent playback.

Memosux a different story - totally crap.

My experiences with both Maxell and Memorex were not good in the past but I haven't had a coaster in a very long time. Only when I first started burning DVDs. I have learned to be careful with the media, especially before it's burned. Fingerprints and scratches seem to cause problems.
I just built this computer less than 1 month ago. Asus P4P800-SE, P4 3.0, 800 FSB, 1 Ghz PC3200 DDR 400Mh memory, Maxtor Diamond Plus 7200 RPM ATA 133 120 Gb hard drive, Emprex 16x DVD-Rom, Optorite DD1205 12x Burner, Sony 48x CDRW and a FX5200 PCI video card w/128 megs of DDR memory. The computer has 6 fans total. a 100mm and an 80mm on the 450 watt power supply, 80mm on the side window blowing in, 120mm on the rear case blowing out, Intel CPU cooler and the fan on the Video Card. I had a Sony 12x burner but I wasn't very happy with it. It seems Sony punishes it's customers that use media other than Sony. All my 8x burned at 4x and the Sony 8xs can't even be forced to burn at 12x. That's why I bought the Optorite. I got tired of Sony screwing me! I haven't had a coaster since getting rid of the Sony! That's over a year ago. I also don't overclock!
I plan to build an Athlon 64 4800+/Asus combo in the not too distant future. Same DVD-Rom and burner but with PCI Express video and a SATA hard drive. I keep hearing what junk Emprex drives are but this is my 5th, all on different computers with no problems. I love the Optorite as it lets you burn double density CDs as well as Dual Layer DVDs. The price of Dual Layer DVD media is just too high right now and I avoid re-writeables like the Plague! I also don't use CD Re-writeable media except for testing. When they go bad, it's sudden and you loose all your data. By the time you get the error message telling you there's a problem with the media and to back up your data, it's already too late! Kids today seem to like to scatter CDs, DVDs and game disks all over the floor where they get destroyed very easily.
The bottom linr is that writeable media is more fragile than commercial Disks. They need to be kept clean. I own about 1500 DVDs, all have been copied. I use the copies and put away the originals. That way if a copy goes bad I can always burn a new one. I'm toying with the idea of installing another hard drive just to save all the DVD files.
Good luck to all
