Hi, bought a dvd player with a usb port on the front so I can plug in my usb stick and watch a movie or TV show off it.

However the dvd player plays Xvid very poorly.

I have tried converting them to DivX 5 using virtual dub and the divx bitrate calculator.

The output is worse quality and the sound is horribly out of synch.

I am converting TV shows mainly but some films also.

Can someone please give me exact DivX and Virtual Dub settings?

Thanks in advance.

If it can play DivX 5.x then it can play XviD. What exactly does play poorly mean? If it "jumps" then it could be it doesn't like packed bitstream and > 1 b frames, in such a case you could simply unpack.

Anyway, the quality is going to be worse since you are re-encoding from a lossy format to a lossy format. As for the audio sync, does VDub throw up a warning about VBR mp3 audio?

Yes, I unpacked it and it still jumps :(

Yes I get the message about VBR, how is this fixed?

Do i need to extract mp3 audio first, then encode video and then add back in the sound?

Thanks,

(P.s are there any other tricks to get XviD to play smoothly on a dvd player?)

Thanks!

Well yes, basically follow the instructions or use VirtualDubMod and you can leave it as is since it can handle VBR mp3.

To get XviD to play smoothly use the Home Theatre profiles.

Could be that the file uses GMC. In such a case playback will pause everytime it hits an s-vop. You would have seen this info in MPEG4Modifier though.

Ok, well what does it mean when the video stops at the exact same point every time I play it on my dvd player?

And it stutters at the exact same points.

Well the frames aren't going to change between playing it. So it could mean that it uses GMC. Could mean something else.

How many files have you tested? I really can't see how it could just not play XviD since DivX is MPEG-4 and XviD is also MPEG-4. XviD encoded with a HT profiles should play just as well.

Ok tried some other XviD files and they seem to work ok.

I guess its just how its encoded and if it meets the correct spec for the dvd player.

I mean XviD encoded files can have loads of different aspects that may not be compatible witht he dvd player.

Xvid has so many options.
