I have .avi movies.
I have the program TMpegEnc to convert to mpg files.
I use the burning program NERO.
I want to make those .avi movies become playable on a DVD Player.
What are the steps I need to go through in order to do this?

I heard you have to convert avi to mpg? or is it mpg2? What is the difference?

When converting to mpeg or mpeg2, what settings do I use? Will the filesize of the mpeg or mpeg2 be more than the .avi file? If so, by how much?

When I burn the mpg or mpg2 files onto a blank DVD-R using NERO, do I just burn it as a Data DVD or do I have to choose other options? What options do I choose?

I have not bought a DVD player yet because I am not sure which one to get in order to be able to play DVD-Rs with mpgs burned on them. What should I look out for before purchasing the DVD player in order to make sure it will play my burned movies on DVD-R?

When you put the blank DVD-R into the DVD player, does it just start playing automatically? If you have more than one movie on the DVD, does it play in alphabetical order or what?

My last question isn't as important yet... but I know I will ask it later anyway. I have .srt and .smi subtitle files with my movies. How would I make these display while I watch the movie files on the DVD player?

Dear desinoob,

1) A simple way to burn avis to dvd would be to convert the avis into dvd compliant format with e.g. VSO DivXtoDVD (free version), then burn with e.g. Nero Recode:

2) A simple way to test whether a dvd player is compatible is to burn a disc (not copyrighted), then take it down to the store to try before buying.

3) Some programs (e.g. DVDSanta, VSO-commercial version) would let you burn avis with subtitles in simple steps (just paste).

Happy dvd burning!
