I should have included this in my first post today, I apologize.

Is there any way to check a DVD-RW disk for errors prior to using it in a stand alone dvd recorder to record from the tv ? My computer does not have a dvd recorder, it does have a dvd rom drive and a cd-rw drive. Reason I ask this is due to the fact I get a lot of failed DVD-RW disk when recording tv programs on my Panasonic DMR-ES10 recorder.

Thanks, Dick

Are you using generic discs?

I don't know of any program available to check your blank disc (I do have on that came with my BenQ BURNER) .. You could always check the disc by recording something on it, checking what you recorded, then erasing it before recording something important ...

The best advice I can give you is to buy either Verbatim or Ritek DVD-RW discs in as slow a speed as you can find.

If you can copy the files over to your hard drive, it means it is at least readable. I try to avoid using -RWs because they are not compatible on other DVD players. If you can, use +RWs or just -/+Rs. I never considered a Panasonic recorder just because they like their proprietary DVD-RAM which are expensive and not compatible with other players. So you could wind up with 100+ DVD-RAM discs in a few years with no player to watch them on if your existing player were to die.

I was thinking the same thing, and like you said I can't play them on my other DVD player. It's a shame, because they are fantastic disk and extremely reliable, maybe the industry will eventually adopt them as the standard. I've been having numerous failures with the cheaper DVD-RW disk and I've tried 3 different brands thinking that it was the brand, obviously not.

These disk are not in any of the stores I shop at. Can you recommend a reliable on line store that carries them at a reasonable price. Is Ritex the same as Ridata ?
