Are there any CHEAP, up conversion dvd players out there ??????
That will convert from normal 480-500 resolution, to 720/1080.
Also, can they up convert using component outputs, or do they have to use HDMI output, to convert ?????
Looking to get one.....My Tv only has 1 DVI input, currently using a HDMI to DVI adapter from my HD cable box to my TV.
Trying to figure out which one to use , using the DVI input & which one to use w/ component input.
Sorry if these questions sound confusing........

yes, answer the question.........
how much do you want to spend???
and, you can get an equally good picture using quality component cables.
keep in mind, running what you have, HDMI to DVI caable, there is no audio using DVI, which i am sure you figured that out.
HDMI will carry both audio and video.
I have an LG LDA-511, plays all formats and does upconversion.
there is a newer model out, but not sure which one it is ,check their site.
best buy has this player for about 150 or so.

not to bad, but the specs are a bit mis-leading....
Quote: Plays DVD, DVD-R/-RW, VCD, CD, CD-R/RW, JPEG, WMA, MP3, AC-3, LCPM, ADPCM, Ogg, DivX, AVI and MPEG-4 formats
no mention of support for the "+" format, only the dash "-"
this is mine
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7048713&type=produc... and it plays both and then some...

but from the specs. it seems to not play the + format, you can buy the + but will have to booktype them to dvd-rom to play. or buy the dash media (if you burn or play burned media)
just my opinion....

dabig, i think you have the right idea checking reviews on avsforum.com. I would not recommend going by circuit city's reviews. Ignore them.
If you're interested in a particular model, post it on avs and wait for comments/suggestions. You will find that a lot of players have problems... for example, macroblocking.
I have a panny s77, and i would recommend it, but i can't say that it is the absolute best out there for the price because i haven't tried any other players. That's why you are better off getting multiple opinions from people who own more than one player and can give* somewhat objective reviews.

@ dabig
clueless is right, the avs forums is a great place. thats how i found out about my previous dvd player and its problems, thats why i returned it for another model.
in that link you have for the Sony, there is no upconversion on that unit and the component side of it says no info available.
i'm telling you, look into the unit i have........ this thing plays it all. i can burn an .AVI file in less then a minute and be watching a full length movie in no time, plus have all the audio and picture quality (providing it was a good upload/download), but downloading a DivX file or a dvdrip and its already encoded (made by data) and plays excellent.

no, the LG (the one i have, up from the 418) has a vacuum load type system. it does pause a second for eject, but does not scratch. i dont know anybody who has a samsung, you can only go by reviews i guess. good luck on your purchase.

I wouldn't use it w/ component.........
I'd use the DVI instead, & then hook-up the audio via optical thru a reciever.

i was in the market for a new dvd player and was prepared to get a more expensive player that was good for music as well, after a bit of looking around i came across this player ( lg - 531)
the clincher for me was it could play AVI or DivX files, this is great since most AVI to dvd converter programs are either buggy or too expensive, to to mention all the time and extra dvd's to convert
i've had this player for three weeks now so far so good, great picture, good sound , and will play anything i've thrown at it. dvd -r+r blanks ,AVI files , i've got most of the dvd programs recode dvdrebuilder , instantcopy 4 , Nero and imgburn
everything works great

i have been happy with mine too, but i had the LG DVB-418 prior to the LDA-511, i had nothing but problems with that unit. i returned it for an upgrade, but not before getting the run around with LG. i had lip sync problems with the 418, they sent me numerous firmware cd's but it only made it worse. now with the 511, no problems as of yet, and it is even slimmer then the 418. the card readed is a nice touch too.
