I have been using Dvd shrink for a while now and I have never had any problems until now. I used nero to burn the discs and have always used the same make of blank dvd's. However last week when I came to burn a dvd for some reason it wouldn't work. Dvd shrink works fine, as far as I can tell and nero does actually burn in onto the disc. It's only when I come to play the movie that I have the problem. It will only play the first few chapters then freezes and wont read the disc. I have tried numerous discs and different movies and they are all the same. I tried using a different dvd re writer and it's still the same, I've tried using different make of discs and it's still the same. I've tried the origional disc in my dvd player and it will read that. I don't understand what is wrong! I've tried playing the copied disc in three different dvd players, plus my lap top and it still freezes at the same scene, no matter what movie I play. Does any one have any suggestions because it's driving me mad!

Set your target size in DVD Shrink to 4300. Perform a deep analysis and enable AEC on maximum smoothness in shrink when starting the backup process. Do not burn at more than 4x.

Also make sure your drives firm is up to date. What brand of discs are you using?

If your backup freezes, stutters, skips, or has some pixelation, it is more than likely due to poor quality media being used. Cheap media is poorly manufactured around the edge of the disc, hence the reason why it mostly skips or freezes from the middle toward the end of the movie. The two main things to consider first are:

1. Is it cheap media that you are using? (ie. some off brand you bought at a local computer store/fair, even a store like Circuit City or Best Buy sells cheap low quality media.)

2. How fast are you burning? - Burn no faster than 4X, might have to go down to 2X with really cheap media.

Also, are you using adhesive labels on your back ups? If so, try removing the labels (if you can) and playing them again. Go here for more info on why not to use labels. - http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=28604

You can go here for some other possible solutions: http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=44912

Also try lowering outcome the "Target DVD size".

Open DVD Shrink. Click "Edit", then "Preferences". On the first tab at the top in the drop down box, change it from "DVD-5 (4.7GB) to "Custom" and enter a number of 4200MB (4464MB is burning to the edge of the disc, you want to stay away from the edge as the edge of cheap media (disc's) are poorly manufactured). Thanks for all your help. I changed the settings in DVD Shrink and burning the disc at 2x instead of 8x which I was doing previously and the dvd now plays fine! I use Imation blank discs as I've tried using others such as Maxell and shops own brand makes but the dvd rewriter does not seem to like them. Thank you all for helping me because when it comes to computers and problems I do not have a clue!

@claireann - good to see you've having some success there, just beware of Imation as they use widely differing quality in disc manufacturers, ie one pack of Imation you buy one day may have discs made by a completely different manufacturer to the last lot you bought, even if the packs look exactly the same. Try downloading this free program - dvd identifier -
http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_tools/dvd_id...

and use it to 'identify' one of those Imations and paste results here. this program won't help you buy stuff next time as it'll be a lottery as to who makes the Imation you next pick. this program will only help you after you've opened the pack and get problems with the discs, but at least you are then better informed about Imation

Yep CMC Mag is the pits. In store buy Fuji, Sony (look for made in Japan - they are usually made by Taiyo Yuden or a quality manufacturer)and Verbatim. Online at a reputable store like supermediastore.com buy Taiyo Yuden. Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim are some of the best out there.

CMC strikes again!
@claireann
The brand of media you buy can make all the difference in the world when it comes to DVD playback. CMC magnetics discs are known to be one of the worst discs manufactures you can get. They will most often go thru the whole burn process without a hitch, and you think you have a good copy. Then either right away, or months later that copy burned on the CMC discs will start having problems and may not work at all. Sometimes you can very rarely get a good batch of these CMCs, but 99% of the time it is crap. I think the only way a CMC burns reliably 100% of the time that it burnt you out of your money when you bought the discs. The problem is that CMC hides under good and not so good brand names. The best media out there can be had for almost the same price as the cheap media, and sometimes it can be found at prices lower than the crap media. I get Sony +Rs made in japan, and Fuji +Rs made in japan. They are Taiyo Yuden discs, and are the best ones out there IMHO. Verbatim also makes good discs, but they have used CMC as a supplier, so you have to be careful in which ones you buy. Buy good media, burn at 4x, and all your problems will go away once the cursed CMCs turn in to what they are supposed to be: coasters.

Die CMC Mag!!!

Seeing as you all were so good in helping me the last time I had problems with DVD Shrink, I am hoping, really hoping that yoou can help me yet again!

It's been working great and I haven't had any problems with it until yesterday. I used the program to copy three dvds and that was fine. It was only after, that I started to have problems. For some reason it wont let me perform a deep anaylis of the disc, saying it encountered an error and unable to read my disc drive. I have two dvd readers and tried them in both and still had the same problem. Now each time I put a disc in to copy, DVD Shrink just freezes and a message comes up saying that it wont respond. I can play the dvd's in both the readers (One is a writer). Does anybody have any ideas...Please!!!!

The message that appears is:

DVD Shrink encountered an error and can't continue
Failed to read file "D:\"
Data Error (cyclic redundancy check.

If I try it in my E drive the message comes up the same but stating file E instead.

The error your received can mean 1: The disc is dirty, scratched or a bad press. If that's the case try cleaning it off or try ripping with decrypter then open and process the files thru shrink. 2: there are some movies shrink can't handle w/o some help. Which movie are you doing?
Here's some alternatives if that's the case: Try AnyDVD running in the background to help shrink - you can dl a 21 free trial to try (well worth the money though) or dl DVDFab Decrypter to tip the movie than process the files thru shrink.

Thanks for your help. The disc I was trying to copy was Lost. I cleaned the disc and DVD Shrink still wouldn't work, so I downloaded dl DVDFab Decrypter and that worked great. I'll use that one from now on! I did wonder if dvds had some kind of new copy right protection on them because I only seemed to have this problem with new discs.

Thankyou!!

Not a problem!
Glad it worked out!! Yes some of the newer discs have newer protection that shrink can't handle since it's no longer updated. Fab decrypter is still updated so you should be good to go.

I probably sound really stupid when it comes to computers but I am having more problems copying DVD's. I bought a pack of Philips dvds to use when copying and the first few worked great, well apart from watching it on my dvd player. It jumped a bit but it was watchable. I used DVD fab decrypter, then DVD Shrink and Nero to burn onto a blank disc. However for some reason, unknown to me it decided to stop worked. The discs were being thrown out of the rewriter, saying there was an internal error. I tried to burn at different speeds and still that didn't work. I bought the imation discs that I used in the past and they worked great, until I had the same problem as the Phillips discs. I've checked to see if the discs are blank (which they should be because they are brand new) and they are. I really don't understand what is happening. Is there anything that I can try? I really hope someone will help me, yet again! I'm just not as clever as you lot when it comes to technical things.

It is really as simple as the blank discs you are using. Get some quality Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden or Sony, Fuji, Maxell(made in Japan).
