Twice I've tried to encode an xvid movie using the Avi2dvd programme, using the guide on this site to the word. It seems to encode fine, that right at the end I get an error message relating to memory problems and I've lost the lot. Any ideas?
Totally new to this by the way, so be gentle.

Try use VSO (free version) to see if things are better:
