Hi,

I am having some probs with my PS2 and playing backed up games. The console has been modded and I know that the disk I am using works because I have played it before on this console.

Sometimes it just boots and plays, and other times I cannot work out how to get the game to play. I keep getting the "Insert a PS2 disc" screen. Have tried all sorts of combinations of buttons now, but to no avail :-(

Do not know what chip has been used in the mod, but any suggestions on how to get the disc to boot correctly would be appreciated.

Balasm, you should really try to get in contact with the person who chipped your PS2 and find out what chip he used in it. You can boot into different modes with most mod chips from how long you hold down the power button and things like that.

You can reset your chip by switch the power off from the back of the PS2 and it should boot in it's native mode. When you turn it on, just press it once and it should work. But yeah, find out what chip you have.

*******
PS2Girl, i'm sure that people would be happy to help you, but you need to start a new thread for your question because it is about another topic.

Toxicfish,

thanks for your reply.

I have opened the box and discovered that the chip is labelled "Messiah 4-2". I have not seen much discussion here about this type of chip, so have no idea if it is a good one or not. I seem to have discovered the trick to boot backup PS2 games, which is to open the drawer and wait for the "browser/cinfiguration" screen to load, then close with the eject button and immediately tap the reset button.

I did start a thread in the PS2 hardware forum to see if I could find out more about the chip and whether it is a good choice or not, but no replies so far. BTW, I won the console in a competition whilst working overseas, and do not even know which country it was purchased in! It is v9 NTSC.

Any info you could provide would be helpful.

Cheers,

Looks like you hit it right no the nose for use of that chip... This was pretty darn hard to find, but i got you an installation guide along with the directions for use of that chip.
http://www.easybuy2000.com/store/downloads/manuals/ps2/messiah2/v4.pdf
Right click on the link and select save to disk or something like that.

I have to admit, i havn't heard of the messiah in some time. My friend got one back like in 2002 and i hadn't heard of them since. Turns out the company that makes them (Channel Technology) was sued back in 2002 by Sony. I couldn't find if Channel Tech stopped making chips directly because of the suit, but basically all info stops there.

This isn't the best chip out there.. but for it's time, it was pretty darn good. It has all the basic features that you need to playing backed up games, and that's all you really need. The only issue that you might have is that this chip is not flash upgradeable. There may be some new copy protections out there that this chip cannot get by. But hey, it's free :)

Yeah the messiah has cause a lot of people problems. If you have the money pay a pro to get that sucker out of there and replace it with a DMS 4 or Matrix Infinity. Settle for no less than the Duo2SE. PS2girl this is the 4th or 5th time I've seen that post. If it doesn't work, return for a refund or exchange. I believe the Logitech wireless controller is decent.

Tokijin and Toxicfish......

Thanks to both of you for your assistance. I seem to be able to get it to boot a lot more regularly now. Interesting to hear that the chip is an old one, as the machine was only purchased about 12 months ago. As I said, I am not sure where it was purchased, could have been in Malaysia or in Singapore, as I was working at sea at the time and these were the main ports of call.

Just happy to be able to play again.

Once again, thanks for your help.

Looks like el cheapo wireless controller to me. The Logitech wireless is $40 or so. Exchange it if you can and pick up the Logitech.
