I'm trying to backup my play disc for Civilization 4 and I'm having trouble. I've got Clone-CD 5.2 but it just sort of hangs there when I tell it to copy the CD. Is this disc protected by safedisc3? I thought CloneCD could handle that. I guess I'll try Alcohol but I've had problems with the virtual drives in the past. Any advice? Should CloneCD be able to copy this CD?

I just tried Alcogol 120 with the SafeDisk 2/3 option selected and it returned many errors reading from CD. I've got a Pioneer 108D and It's a pretty reliable drive. Does anybody know what CD protection is being employed of the Civ 4 CD's?

OK. I've done a little more digging and it looks like Civ4 uses SafeDisc4 protection. That would explain why my versions of Alcohol and CloneCD can't copy the disc. But I don't know what can duplicate safedisc4. Any advice would be appreciated.

Well...regardless about what protection the game CD uses, the easiest thing to do is to create an image of it using alcohol's 'Image Burning Wizrd' and mount it on a Daemon Tools virtual drive. Wouldn't that be the best thing to do? Daemon Tool can emulate SafeDisk, so that would be the first thing i would do!
Try it out and let me know the results.
Cheers.

As it turns out I was just being too impatient. CloneCD can back up this CD, it just takes a very long time to create the image. I had to wait over 15 minutes for it to get to 1%, another 10 minutes for it to get to 2%. But it sped up considerably after that. Still took over 50 minutes to create the image but it worked. Then by selecting 'Hide CD-R Media' from the cloneCD properties menu in the system tray the game will play with my backup in the drive. I'm still not sure what protection is involved here. My buddies say SecureROM7 is being used. I'm not sure which it is.

According to clony xxl, it uses Safedisc v2.
Did you make an image using Clonecd, then use it to burn the image? Or did you use another program to create the image? Also, when i "wrire from image", I don't get the option to hide cd-r media.

You can burn these discs and play from your backup using only CloneCD (if you choose). Check out this tutorial :
http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=140075
To play the game with your backup you need to use some sort of emulator. (the tutorial explains it) If you right click on the cloneCD icon in your system tray and select the 'Hide CD-R' option it should work (my backup does).

I am using Daemon Tools to install my Civ IV. Installs fine, but I get insert original disc error. Once I loaded the cracked exe I'm still not able to play due to this error:
"The procedure entry point _BinkShouldSkip@4 could not be located in the dynamic link library binkw32.dll."
Back to the drawingboard.

Try this, it worked for me:
Uninstall and reinstall the game.
But before updating it to the current version (1.52), update it to 1.09.
THEN patch it to 1.52.
Give that a shot.
