hello, all. i'm trying to figure out if the problem i've got is my ps2 going bad, or something else. about 2 months ago i got the SMP discs (dvd and cd) and have used them to play about 10 games or so. some time last week though, it started giving me the following error message: "not a valid ps2 disc" on the SMP screen. since then, it seems to be booting to my games less and less as the days go on. any idea what could be causing this?

dude your lens is dirty, i had the same issue, you need to buy a lens cleaner, i know consolepoint.com has one, but it may also be another issue. Your ps2 may just be dying out slowly. If you have a ps2 for more them 3 years it usually is that.

Yeah I've had my PS2 4 years with no problems. You may want to try cleaning your laser with a Q tip and rubbing Alcohol. Don't use a lens cleaner, they can scratch your lens and make it worse. What media are you using and what speed are you burning at? Use DVD Decrypter. Burn at 4x on an 8x DVD-R. Use Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim, Ritek, TDK, Maxell, Sony, or Phillips. Here's a guide for DVD Decrypter: http://home.earthlink.net/~moderator/id3.html

I've tried a lens cleaner and it didn't seem to help any. I'll try cotton and alcohol tonight. Also, I've used Nero6 to do a direct copy from the original to a Sony DVD-R 8x 4.7GB disc. Not sure what speed it was at though. But since it was playing them before without a problem, I don't think it would be that. I'll try a more in depth cleaning and let you know. Thanks!

If that doesn't work, try burning with DVD Decrypter using the specifications I posted. Sony DVD-R's should be fine.

hello again, i think i've narrowed the problem to the discs. i was using sony DVD-R discs and noticed that they were somewhat see-thru when held up to the light. to test, i took a laser pointer and shined it from underneath towards a wall ( to simulate the ps-2 ). it went thru and hit the wall at about 5% or so. figuring that this coudn't be a good thing, i went out and got some maxell discs with a heavy/dark label on them and the laser didn't go thru at all. when i copied them to the maxell discs, everything seems to work fine. thanks for all the help eveyone!!
