Hello All,
I was just handed a rather interesting project at work. We need to master video DVDs for use in computers as well as stand alone DVD players. I get to figure out the medium (DVD+/-R), Burner, and media that will be most compatible.
I read somewhere that DVD-R is the most compatible, especially with older DVD players. I'm wondering if anyone knows if that's true. Also does anyone know if the brand of the discs makes a significant impact on their usuability? For instance, is Brand X really bad and I shouldn't even test it?
I really appreciate any help you all can offer!
- Brian

First of all .. DVD+R when you booktype it to DVD-ROM is virtually 100% compatible .. If your DVD writer doesn't support booktyping, then DVD-R is the way to go.
As far as the DVD writer. There's been several threads here at AD devoted to that subject (as well as many websites). Personally, I have several DVD writers and each has endeared itself to me in it's own way. The Plextor PX716A is an excellent unit, but is really overpriced in today's market. You can get excellent writers for ˝ the cost. LiteOn's SOHW1693S is another popular drive and is a cost effective alternative. My current favorite is my BenQ DW1640. It is very fast, quiet and in close to 1,000 burns I've yet to produce a bad disc. All three of these drives support booktyping.
As far as cost .. the Plextor PX716A runs around $100, while the BenQ DW1640 abd the LiteOn SOHW1693S run around $40.
There are many other drives that many people have had great success with .. the above drives just seem to garner the most support and have extensive utility packages included.
Now to the media issue. There is a gigantic difference between the top echelon of blank DVDs and the untouchables. Most companies utilize several manufacturers to supply them with DVD media. Several such as Memorex, use a company called CMC Magnetics Corporation. This is one of the worst discs that you could waste your money on. There are a few good brands of disc that you can count on. Sony, which sells both made in Japan (MIJ) discs made by Taiyo Yuden and made in Taiwan discs (MIT) mfg coded Sony are all very good. Verbatim (my favorite) is an excellent source of media. Almost anything else that has 'made in Japan' printed somewhere on the label will be of excellent quality. Here at After Dawn we always have a thread in the media forum pointing out weekly sales. There are several good on-line venders also.
Back to the DVD writers ...
Here is a good link that compares the main players:

This is probably the wrong place to ask, but do DVD+R DL discs have the same compatibility when booktyped?

In my limited DL experience ... yes, booktyped DL media will play in all but the most antiquated DVD players ...

How can you check to see if your writer booktypes - I have purchased a new one about 2 months ago or so and want to check to see if it "book-types" - I bought it for doing dual layers and knew nothing about book-typing when I bought it

zhelpz,
What make and model dvdrw do you have? Benq, lite-on, plextor, ricoh, and some LG drives will bitset. Most pioneers won't and those that will require being flashed with hacked f/w. Nec's also require a hacked f/w flash. Most sony's but not all, are rebadged lite-on's and are capable of bitsetting. The latest sony is a rebadged benq and is also capable of bitsetting. I don't think samsung's or toshiba's are capable. Some HP's are. There are a lot of rebadged model's out there so tell us your make and model and we can tell you whether or not it is capable and if so how to do it.

Some burning software (Nero, DVD Decrypter) will identify the make and model of your drive. It is the destination when you burn an image to disc. Programs like DVDInfoPro and DVDIdentifier will also identify your drive and tell you what your firmware is.

Quote: Most Compatible Media
Most compatible media are Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim and Maxell DVD+R book typing them into DVD-ROM = play in all functional dvd players. Additionally, they're high quality and that means TOP NOTCH media.

Ok
Nero toolkit says
The HP is a 640b firmware version E152
Memorex is a DL4RWID2 firmware vsjws5
--------
So if either of these do booktype - then I can start using the +R disks which should be more compatible than the -R's?
BUT
If either of them do NOT booktype - then I should stick with the -R's?
Am I understanding this correctly?

OK,
Your memorex dvdrw is a rebadged lite-on SOHW-1673S. You should be able to use the lite-on booktype utility. Here's a link to it and there is also a link to a usage guide on the page. http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=83441 The latest f/w for that drive is JWS6 http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=2082
I'm not sure on the HP 640b. You can try useing nero or dvd decrypter to booktype dvd+r to dvd-rom with this drive. Also if you use dvd shrink if the dvd-rom option is not grayed out you can check that box.
You can check for current f/w with dvd decrypter. Click on tools/drive/check for firmware updates.
You can validate that booktype is dvd-rom with dvd identifier http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/ after the disc is burned.

After more research, I think your HP 640b is a LG oem.

Thanx everyone.
Mort I just finished reading you last posts, and I will do all of those things you assissted with.
------
It's amazing that the same company makes so many different drives ...
------
I will do some testing and see if I will be able to use the +R media as DVD-Rom. Always want to stay current w/ the best / most compatible media.

I know its been a while ... but ...
Mort,
I got a chance earlier today to go to the sites and DL the files I needed through the links you provided. I did the firmware update a couple weeks ago - once I re-booted my system, I did not have any problems so that was a success!
I am just now getting a chance to go back (I wanted to really take my time, as there was so much information on the site). I DLed the booktype utility and it seems to have gone through with no problems. I even put another blank in just to see if the settings stayed the same and they did. I will probably get a chance later today or sometime tomorrow to back up a movie so I can test the finished disk to ensure that it has indeed changed after the burn.
I dont expect to have any issues. This will really help so I wont have to depend on my Nero application so much to burn in when I want to use other apps that do not change bitset. Now that my Memorex (Lite-on) burner has the update, I should be able to utilize whatever software I want and get the same results for better compatability on my stand alone players.
--------------
I havent had any luck with the HP - but I am going to look into some LG info to see if I can find something on the 640b - via the info you provided about that.
--------------
Mort, and all others that lent a helping "hand" thanks so much for your time and assitance; it is greatly appreciated.

@Keork
I know i have seen this very same post by you under another name a few months ago, worded almost exactly the same if my memory hasn't completely gone. I don't mind supplying answers if you genuinly really need answers, but the thread always starts with " i've been handed this project at work" and is signed by brian. Maybe i am just being paranoid again... let me look,, ahh yes, here we are:
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/251989 http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/251579 and now this thread starts out with what must be your cut and paste header. That is what makes me paranoid, i think i have heard this before. And wasn't your question was answered then?? if i am not mistaken as far as to booktyping? You can ask more than one question, just dont start it out with that same header all the time. It freaks me out for some reason, maybe its time to load up on the meds...oh look another one..
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/248454 although in that one it looks like you got shot down before you got an answer., and it looks like you only got mistaken for ddk25. See how this same question wording throws me off?

@MaxBurn
The reason for the different threads is that they each deal with a different aspect of my problem. This one was the first where I got some ideas for a burner, the second thread was to see if our existing burner could do book typing. And no, I'm not DDK25. I really would like to find out about duplicators, but it seems as though folks like gwendolin aren't trusting individuals. Although you can choose to not believe me, please let me reiterate, this is a completely legitimate project for the college where I work. The college is the National Technical Institute for the Deaf http://www.ntid.rit.edu - we're working with the Admissions department and NCE (NTID Center on Employment) to try and solve their problems with burned DVDs. I think part of the problem is the crappy media that was used, but booktyping may also help solve this problem.
Hopefully, now that people have more information about this they can get past the similarities to DDK25's post.
Also, if I could point out, I'm employed by a Federally funded Institute of Higher learning while ddk25 is evidently a self employeed p0rn pusher.
Hope this helps resolve any of your questions, and hopefully now you'll feel more comfortable answering mine.
- Brian

Thanks for clearing that up Keork. I cant add much to what others have already stated. DVD+R lets you set booktype to DVD-ROM making it most compatible with other systems. Good DVD+R medium: Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden, Sony, Maxell, not much else. Drives, seems to be a personal preference.
I believe you, just seeing the same kind of lead in to your questions started to make me think i had heard the question before. But it was the lead in that i heard before, the question is different. Good luck on your project. Stick with good media, burn slow, dont multitask while burning, and you should be ok. Duplicators can cost big bucks, just google for DVD duplicators, and you will get all kinds of hits.
