Unlocking a cell phone allows u to use a cellphone that was given to you by, say Cingular (locked to that service) with another service (T-Mobile).

U must also have an account on the new service as well...it just allows you to grab signal from their towers as your primary.

Example...

Mr X leaves Cingular for T-Mobile due to better reception/plan whatevah, he LOVES his RAZRV3 but T-Mobile won't give him without charging him 300 stones...he says "pound sand, you guys", unlocks his fone, cxls his service with Cing, contracts with TMoby and bingo bango he uses his beloved fone on their service.

Could be more to it, but that's basically it...Unlocking doesn't give u free calls to space or moscow or nothin.

also, you can use your phone to accept other service provider outside of US for example in Europe or in Asia as long as it will accept a sim card and your phone is a Tri-band or Quad-band which means your phone has a capability to operate on other band which is being used in those places.

another question.... hopefully it's not a dumb one... if u unlock a phone, can you still use its original sim card even though it is now unlocked?

I just signed up as a member and I see lots of people asking for help with unlocking their Razrs. I have this problem also but do not understand where the answers are and how to get them. Can someone help shed some light on this for me?
