Yes you get better burns with good brand media. But I don't know where you heard that hp was good. You either use Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim or Ritek. Fuji,Sony and MAxell are fine so long as they are made in Japan. Here is a good media test thread.

in addition to what glueeater said, don't get philips either, hp is already poor quality due to the various manufacturers they use for their product, but Philips is even WORSE~ :)

docTY~

fuji, look for "made in japan" on the spindle and you should be ok~ :) those are USUALLY Taiyo Yudens, in either format~

Verbatim 8x dvd+r MCC003
Verbatim dvd+r DL (MKM001)= flawless no compression backups

I'll add in the TDK's. Along with HP/memosux/phillips/and most store brand name media to avoid like the plague, with the exception of Office Depot 8x media.

Stick with the Japanese media like taiyo yuden/fuji/sony/and maxell. Verbatim data life plus is also very good, but comes from singapore and taiwan.

The taiwanese fuji are advised to stay away from.

Office depot has quality ritek media in their 8x speeds, and are very good.

Mik: What format do you use?
Explain the Lockup.

What media are you using? Brand name/speed rate/and format.

Quality media can do many improvements for playback.Stand alone players can magnify the defects of the lower quality manufacturers. It makes them harder to play, thus giving poor playback or no disc inserted errors..
The different formats can also do a number on stand alones.

Edit: Back to original question: No,not the cheaper media, but the low quality media can cause many more read errors on your backups. I don't look at the cost of media as cheap prices must be crappy media. I look at all the major store sales each week.Staples and Office depot are my main purchasing sites. I believe staples have memosux this week and last week had HP on sale for around $18 for spindles of 50. That's around 35 cents apiece for the likely cmags. If you get in on their sony and fuji sales, you can get the taiyo yudens for that same price and even cheaper. Last sale had fuji tys for 30 cents each! Ritek Office depot goes for 25-30 cents each/while the maxell riteks go for around 35 cents apiece. That's 10 cents different just for the name brand!
The quality is about the MID codes on the media. You may save on the short term of some of those cheapie priced low quality manufacturers, but you'll pay for it in the long run.

Local stores have no clue of what they have. It's like buying a hyundai accent or a honda civic for about the same price. Look those labels over good for the japanese brands. Usually taiyo yuden and hitachi on most of them.

HP a1118x-b/athlon 64-3300+/BenQ 1650 BCDC/LG 8163B/Modded Wii/Epson-R300 and Ty Watershields!!!

@saugmon

so are you implying that KOREAN made cars are of WORSE quality than Japanese ones?/? LOL...i'm only kidding with you..despite being 1/2 korean, my entire KOREAN side of the family live in JAPAN~ who would have thought? i guess they all knew WHERE to go for the "good quality" stuff and a better, happy life...and personally, i would always choose a Japanese manufactured car over the Korean counterpart; this is also true with dvd media~ :) LOL

not trying to instigate any "racial tension", just found it funny, that's all for now~ :)

JAPANESE made media is THE way to go...long live Taiyo Yuden~:P

p.s. i will have to 2nd the notion, that TDK sucks~! :) or as you nicely put it,
