Sorry to and such a basic question but how do you use Anydvd? I installed it and can not figure out how to decode a movie to my hard drive. The help file says you do not have to copy a movie to your HDD but since I only have one DVD drive what option do I have?

Hi there,

AnyDVD sits in the background...

You don't need to use it like an other software.

As soon as you insert a DVD movie in your drive, it removes all the protection for you, in the background.

So any software you use, it will see the files as non protected.

So yes, you could just use Windows Explorer, and copy the VIDEO_TS from the DVD to your HD ! (With AnyDVD running)...

a little news

Important Notice!

AnyDVD tackles Sony DRM Rootkit Virus!
If AnyDVD is installed and active on your PC, the new so-called "Sony DRM Rootkit Virus" has no access to your system and the affected audio CD appears unprotected regardless! Another good reason to get AnyDVD!
http://www.slysoft.com/en/

The "Sony rootkit" case Posted by Mikko @ 11:25 GMT

There's been some recent developments in digital rights management systems (DRM) that have security implications. Some DRM systems have started to use rootkit technology. Rootkits are normally associated with malware but in this case a rootkit is used to enforce the copy control policies of audio CDs!

Rootkit is technology that hides software from the user and security software. This kind of technology is normally used by malware authors that want their presence to remain undetected in the system as long as possible. DRM software is not malicious but it has other reasons for hiding from the user. DRM software restricts the user's ability to make copies of a record and for that reason uses technology that prevents removal and modification of the software.

EULASony BMG is currently using a rootkit-based DRM system on some CD records sold in USA. As far as we know, this system has been in use since March 2005. We've made some test purchases for Sony BMG records from Amazon.com and can confirm that they contained this technology.

When you insert such a CD to a Windows-based PC, the record will display a license agreement and then it will seem install a song player software - while it really installs a rootkit to the system. Once the rootkit is there, there's no direct way to uninstall it. The system is implemented in a way that makes it possible for viruses (or any other malicious program) to use the rootkit to hide themselves too. This may lead to a situation where the virus remains undetected even if the user has got updated antivirus software installed.

F-Secure has implemented an anti-rootkit scanner in F-Secure Internet Security 2006. The F-Secure BlackLight scanner is able to detect both this Sony DRM rootkit system and any malware that hides using it.

We've just published a technical description on this rootkit, with details on how to distinguish hidden items belonging to the DRM system from potentially harmful malware.

Blacklight in actionSo: if you've recently used CD releases from Sony BMG that state that they are content protected on your Windows computer, the "Scan for Rootkits" function in our product will detect this program on your system. Same happens with our free BlackLight beta that you can download from our web site.

If you find this rootkit from your system, we recommend you don't remove it with our products. As this DRM system is implemented as a filter driver for the CD drive, just blindly removing it might result in an inaccessible CD drive letter. Instead, we recommend you contact Sony BMG directly via this web form and ask for directions on how to remove the software from your system. We've test driven this and they will provide you with tools to do this. However, they will install additional ActiveX components to your system while they are doing this so be adviced.

What will Nero see with AnyDVD running? Does AnyDVD create a "unprotected" image of the movie for Nero to copy?

AnyDVD is a driver, which unprotects DVD-Movies automatically in the background. This DVD appears unprotected and region code free for all applications and the Windows operating system as well. With AnyDVD's help copy tools like CloneDVD, Nero,Pinnacle Instant Copy, InterVideo DVD-Copy, etc. are able to copy CSS protected Movies. With the help of AnyDVD you can watch movies with non matching region codes with every DVD Player Software you like!

AnyDVD decrypts not just DVDs: AnyDVD allows you also to play, copy and rip protected Audio CDs!
But AnyDVD does much more, of course. For example, it is possible to control the rotational speed of your DVD drive, so you can watch DVDs on your PC with far less noise!
AnyDVD is the perfect Add-On for your HTPC (Home Theater PC). It can prevent the automatic launch of software from your Video DVDs (e.g., PC-Friendly) and you can start user defined programs on disc insertion and removal.
AnyDVD can adjust your monitor's vertical refresh rate (e.g. 72 Hz with NTSC and 75 Hz with PAL) automatically if you wish!

AnyDVD can remove unwanted user prohibitions, e.g. it removes forced subtitles or it lets you skip copyright messages and FBI Warnings.
Features

* Works as a driver automatically in the background
* Removes encryption (CSS) and region code (RPC) from DVDs
* Removes analogue copy protection (Macrovision)
* Removes prohibited user operations like forced subtitles and other limitations
* Decrypts WITHOUT having to save the data onto the hard disk
* Decrypts "on the fly"
* Prevents launch of software from your Video DVDs (e.g., PC-Friendly)
* Allows setting of your vertical refresh rate depending on the
video material
* Allows execution of programs on disc insertion and removal
* Allows speed control of your DVD drives
* Works with all DVDs
* Works with all DVD-drives, no matter what region code it has
* Works with every DVD copying and player software (e.g. CloneDVD)
* Works transparently for the operating system: DVDs can be shared over the network, they can be copied with the command prompt or with Windows Explorer, etc.
* Proven to be stable and fast, does not need an ASPI driver
* New Feature AnyCDDA: play, copy and rip protected Audio CDs!

@tsquic

Once you click on the fox icon it will appear in your task tray. When you put in a DVD the fox will flash pale and then red. Once it has done that you can begin decrypting whatever dvd you are using.

You will be happy you have it.

Well I used AnyDVD and it seems to work well but I have a different problem now: I tried to back up the movie "Maid in America", it has both wide screen and full screen versions. I first tried to use Nero to copy the movie to my HDD. With the preview window enabled Nero attempted to copy every file from the dvd to my HDD. It copied on complete version ok but when it tried to copy the second version an error occured and the whole process aborted. I then tried to use Dvddecrypter and ran into the same problem but at least I have the log file telling me which file produced the error. While attempting to copy file " VTS_02_1.VOB" Dvddecrypter produced the following error: "I/O error! ScsiStatus: 0x02 Interpretation: Check Condition
CDB: 28 00 00 21 8C 50 00 00 01 00
Interpretation: Read(10)-Sector:2198608
Sense Area:F0 00 03 00 21 8C 50 0E 00 00 00 00 15 82 00 00 00 00 03 00
Interpretation: Unknown (positioning Error) (0x15, 0x82)"
It then asked if I wanted to abort, Retry or Ignore, I selected Abort. It then asked if I wanted to delete the incomplete file and I chose Yes. Dvddecrypter went on to copy the remaining files to the HDD. When finished I tried to copy the contents of folder "VIDEO_TS" and both Nero and Shrink would say an error was encountered. Nero mentioned the file by name that I aborted in the error message.
If one VOB file is not present why would that cause Nero or Shrink not to be able to read the remaining files? Also, is it possible to tell Nero or Decrypter not to copy one of the two versions of the movie when ripping the DVD to the HDD? The error seems to occur when only the second version of the movie on the DVD is copied. Any ideas?

I downloaded Clone DVD 2 and read the movie with it. During the attempt to read the movie to my HDD Clone DVD would not copy the same movie file as the otehr two programs. I then took the dvd out of the drive and took another look...this time seeing two finger prints across the surface. I cleaned the dvd with some eye glass cleaner and what do you know!! the same file now copied just fine:) I don't know why I did not notice the smuge marks before. I think I will clean all DVD's in the future before trying to make backups.
Also, Clone DVD 2 and Any DVD are fantastic programs:)

It's the first thing I do before I rip one. Cleaning it can make all the difference in the world.
