I'm embarrased to say how long I've been working on this problem and can't make it work.
I'm running an AMD 3500 64 chip at 1.8GHz with 1 Gig memory. 2 optical drives 1 burner Win XP
I simply want to import video into an editing program.
I have 40 hours of home video I recorded on to my DVR then burned onto DVD. I load the DVD into my DVD drive and try to import the file and it isnt recognized as a valid file type.
So I downloaded a ripper program and have converted the file to MPEG and I cannot import it into any editing program. Have tried to import into Microsoft Movie Maker and it won't recognize it.
I tried reading the file with GSpot codec info appliance to find what codecs were involved with the process, no luck. As a matter of fact I've tried using GSpot on several files and DVD videos, both commercial movies and the home movies I had burned to DVD and no information is provided. I can't seem to render any of the files.
So I've got DVD's that I can't edit, download into a file that isn't supported, and doesn't register with GSpot to give me some stinking clue what is going on. I'm guessing this is about format and CODECs but I guess I don't know enough to solve this problem. I had hoped this new wiz bang computer would help a lot in this area, but sheeeeesh it's proving too frustrating for me.
So is this even possible? Strip the video off a DVD into some usable format that would allow me to import it into an editing program?
Below is a list of codecs loaded on my computer.

I hope this makes some kind of sense, I've been at this so long I cant see or think straight. You'd think that editing a little home movie footage wouldn't be such an impossibility, but you'd be wrong. HELP.
