I have video depositions on VHS tapes, which I understand are in AVI format. I am dubbing the VHS tapes onto a DVD-RW disks using a Sony RDR-VX515 dual deck. The videos are then in VOB format on the resulting disk. I have to have the files in MPEG1 in order to have the editing done that I need. Nero transcodes to MPEG4. Can someone recommed a better method of dubbing that will produce MPEG1 from AVI or a program that will transcode VOB to MPEG1? Thanks.

Well actually VHS Tapes aren"t in AVI Or any format because it is analogue and AVI and Mpeg ect are all Digital formats so the VHS Tapes can be captured to whatever format you want depending on your Capture Hardware and software.....

Also why do you need to have the Video in Mpeg-1 format to edit it because Mpeg-1 isn"t a Particularilly Good format especially at higher resolutions and it is a More difficult format to edit than say the AVI format and converting your VOB files to Mpeg-1 will involve a Drastic loss of Quality.....

If I were you I would Transfer the VHS over to DVD in VOB format and then transfer the VOB files to your PC and then Use a native Mpeg-2 editor (VOB and Mpeg-2 are pretty much the same Format) Like "Womble Mpeg Video Wizard 2005" to edit the VOB files and the editor will save the edited VOB files as Mpeg-2 files without Quality Loss and then you can use a DVD authoring program to add your Menu"s and Chapters and to Burn them back to DVD....
The "Womble Mpeg Video Wizard 2005" can also save your edited Files as Mpeg-1 files but that will involve a Drastic Loss of Quality.....

So basicly you can use the Program to convert the VOB files to Mpeg-1 files or which would be better would be to just use the Program to do the editing that you need done and then save it as a Mpeg-2 file without any Quality Loss and you can just author the Mpeg-2 file back to DVD or do with it what you wish.....

Maybe if you told me what the Final purpose of all of this is I could help you Further in getting what you need done without a Drastic loss of Quality......

Cheers

PS: "Womble" also have another Mpeg editor that is more basic called "Mpeg2VCR" if you don"t need to do very fancy editing....

Read http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/dvd2vcd_with_smart_dvd2av... . Actually, if you already have the VOB set you can skip the rippng (SmartRipper) part.
