Mod Chip or Swap Magic?? Can you vets. recommend plz.

I'm new and ignorant I'll go ahead and admit...I'm sure this has been answered ions of times....but I just found the forum. Concerning the question...I like the sound of the SM because it is cheaper and seems easier to use...you guys are the pros so which one works, should I stay clear of buying one or the other... and can you give me an idea of where to find the best price!!

I'm a swap magic user, but was a modchip user on the older PSX system. I loved the modchip because it was painless and easy. If you get a quality chip (and someone will chime in as to which one is the best) you can have a lot of carefree backups and never have to worry about a thing. If you can afford the chip, get the chip IMHO.
For Swap Magic, I've had mine for quite a while now and have been very happy with it. I've never had a problem that is a result of the Swap Magic... only a result of the burning process. There are so many SM users that if a game gives SM users a problem, someone on here figures out how to make it work, so its golden. If you want a cheap fix to play burned games, SM is the ticket. If you have a fat PS2 as opposed to the slim one, I'd recommend a flip top case too. The slide card itself has been reported to lead to premature laser wear that could cause your PS2 not to read anything at all... even originals.
As far as where, there are hundreds of places that sell them and they all go for about the same price. Just do a few searches and find the one you like the most.

As I've said before, I highly recommend installing a mod chip inside the PS2. Had mine for a very long time now with not a single problem running any game. Very convenient!

I don't think this is true
I play games online all the time with chip enabled without any problems. All my backups have DNA$ patched, latest games I've done this with is Star Wars BF2, Ratchet Deadlocked, Brothers in Arms, and all connect online and pass DNA$ with no problems what so ever. Mod chip is of course enabled because I'm playing backups.

the online part was just what i was told. I do not play online
myself. But everything else i wrote is fact.
The chip is all around a better choice than swap magic
DMS4 Pro, DMS4 Lite, Matrix Infinity
settle for no less than the best or you'll be sorry later
when you can upgrade it with new features via flash downloads
a good chip is around $55
Swap magic and Fliptop around $35-$40
But the chip you will have to pay someone to install unless
you have REALLY good soldering skillz

I use swap magic too, with the slide card. Can anyone tell me if the slide card really damages my ps2? And other things I should beware of when I use my slide card?

/me uses Swap Magic 3.6 w/ the little card too. It's only $30 total, and very easy to use after you get the hang of it (took me maybe 3 times to be completely comfortable with it).

i have heard of people who have damaged the PS2.
You are manually poping things open that are not made to
do that, so the possibilty is always there.
With Swap Magic it may cost more but a flip top
is a much better and easier option.

since I don't live in the USA it's pretty hard for me to get the right flip top. I don't trust ebay because I got ripped pretty badly there.

Agrees with Steimy. Go with the DMS 4 or Matrix Infinity: http://teammodders.com/ps2_mc.php?ex=2. Your looking at $100-$110 after installation. The slide tool can damage your PS2 eject motor, if it's jammed in the slide station with wreckless abandon. If used properly, there is no real harm to the PS2. I got sick of having my front cover off, and eventually switched to the flip top. Now I made the ultimate upgrade to a Matrix Infinity, and my PS2 should be shipped back any day now.

well, I'm not gonna mod it because it's too expensive. And ps3 is coming out here next year. So I'm gonna save up money for that.
I don't think my ps2 is gonna die before the ps3 is out. But thanks anyway for the information.
