Hard to say what's wrong, but let's try to analyze. What was your final resolution for the file (width, height) after all the filters, etc. DivX tends to be extremely picky if you try to pass incorrect screen widths or heights to it -- your video size should be multiplies of 16.
Which version of the codec did you use and which version of the VirtualDub?

Final resolution, 640x297 (after cropping) all the software was dowloaded from your site, except the dvd2avi, got the earlier one cause vfcovert was giving me problems...

And your problem is solved -- 297 is not multiple of 16. Leave slightly black borders in top and in bottom of the picture when cropping to get the resolution to be a multiple of 16. 304 is the nearest multiple of 16 to your resolution.

Look at our "split AVI with Dub" guide from article section, you should be able to figure out how to cut the unwanted stuff off.

When you use Smartripper(I have ver 2.41), the movie button will be selected and it will auto select the largest Title/Program Chain/Angle as this is 99% of the time the movie itself.
In the next box under Chapters, all will be selected.
If you know what chapter(s) are the credits that you don't want, simply de-select them before starting the rip.
If you don't know what chapter(s) then simply click on none then select one or two of the last chapters and do a quick rip. Then double-click on the largest saved VOB file and play it. I have mplayer2 setup with the right codecs to play the VOBs directly. If you selected too many or too few chapters or cells then simply delete all the ripped files, reselect and re-rip.
Once you figure what chapters you want and what you don't want, select all, de-select the chapter(s)/cell(s) you don't want and rip!
You will definitely save yourself some time. I just ripped 6 min of credits in just over a minute, then checked .. so let's say it took 2 minutes. Same credits would take the same time to rip and about 20 minutes to encode on my PC. Then I would just toss all that work using Virtualdub.

Thanks, I'll try that, also one last question, what would be a good bit rate if I wanted to get a movie onto one cd (ie about 700MB)

Use a bitrate calculator to calculate the exact bitrate based on your movie's length and the audio you're using.

I had the same error message. I can only presume you were using the tutorial on the site.
I think the problem is that in the first pass (s)he doesnt actually tell you to change the "Variable Bitrate Mode" to "2-pass, first pass" and since the default is not this (I cant remember what it is) it causes problems with the 2nd pass (since the first pass wasnt specified as the first pass).
I only realised this after looking at the picture next to the first pass settings section in the tutorial and saw that difference. I havent tried it yet but I'm hoping it'll be ok.

Just a thought: With Virtualdub you can choose to convert only part of the movie. (use sliders and decide start- and end points). May very well be quicker than having to rip select titles, especially if you make errors more than once :-)
