CONVERTING A 16:9 (1.78) ANAMORPHIC DVD VIDEO WITH A 720x576 PIXEL ASPECT RATIO TO 4:3 (1.33) DISPLAY ASPECT FOR FULL SCREEN DISPLAY ON A 4:3 TELEVISION.

(This guide is only for those who only have a 4:3 TV but would like to watch DVD in full screen with the correct aspect ie ( not horizontally squashed and vertically stretched)

Software Used:
DVD Decrypter
DGConvert/DGIndex
AC3 delay corrector
VitualDubMpeg2
TMpegEnc 2.5
DOS
Nero

This is a longwinded approach as I have not found software that can do all this in one step ? but you do get to grasp all the in?s and outs of video and audio.

STEP 1. (DVD Deycrypt)

Use DVD Decrypter to rip the main movie (VOB?s) to the hard drive.

STEP 2. (Demux)

Use DGConvert/DGIndex to demux the VOB files into separate AC3 audio and m2v elementary mpeg video streams.

Set to demux audio track No. 1. (Usually Dolby Digital English)

(Demux the vob's one by one so the AC3 delay correction value is concatenated to the AC3 file name.)

STEP 3. (Resize, Crop & Frameserve)

Open the demuxed m2v file in VitualDubMpeg2

Add resize filter to video and resize to 960x576 using Lanczos3 filter mode.
Add Null Transform Filter and crop x1 =120 : x2 = 120.

(Or for absolute full screen 4:3 ? Much of the sides are lost)
Add resize filter to video and resize to 1440x816 using Lanczos3 filter mode.
Add Null Transform Filter and crop x1 = 360 : x2 = 360, y1 = 120 : y2 = 120)

In both cases the resultant Pixel Aspect Ratio should be 720x576.

Set Audio Out to None.

Start Frameserver for TMpegEnc 2.5.

STEP 4. (Transcode)

Load Frameserved project into TMpegEnc 2.5. (TMpegEnc 3 Express is a waste of time!!)

Use DVD PAL template and modify system settings as required.

(My Settings)

1 Set stream type to ES (Video Only).

Video Tab:
1. Rate Control Mode ? Constant Bit Rate CBR
(This should be the same for all the files to transcode. You will have to work out a suitable bitrate that will allow the transcoded files to be of optimum size to fit on a single 4.7GB DVD bearing in mind that the Dolby Digital AC3 files still need to be multiplexed.

2. Encode Mode ? Non Interlaced.

3. DC Component Precision 9 Bits

4. Motion Search Precision ? Motion Estimate Search (Fast)

Advanced Tab:
1. Video Source Type - Non Interlaced (Progressive)

2. Source Aspect Ratio 4:3. (Because file has resized and cropped in VirtualDub)

3. DC Component Precision 9 Bits

4. Video Arrange Method - Full Screen.

All other settings can remain as default from the DVD PAL template.

Start Transcoding???.. Repeat Step 3 & 4 for all remaining files.

STEP 5. (Audio Skew Adjust)

Using AC3 delay corrector, correct audio delays in the demuxed AC3 files. The adjustment amount is automatically inserted when the file is loaded.

STEP 6. (Multiplex)

Using TMpegEnc 2.5 MPEG Tools, multiplex the aspect adjusted m2v elementary files with The corresponding time corrected Dolby Digital AC3 files.
Use - Mpeg2 System VBR mode.

The output should be in Mpeg2 System Format.

STEP 7. (Merge)

Merge the resultant Mpeg2 files using the simple old DOS way.
ie [ copy /b 01.mpg+02.mpg+03.mpg+xx.mpg finalmovie.mpg ]

STEP 8. (Re-Author DVD)

Use any DVD authoring package (NERO) to author a new DVD with the resised movie.
